Francesco Futia Obituary

Futia, Francesco (Frank) A. DELMAR Francesco (Frank) A. Futia, 86, of Delmar passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at the Stratton VA Medical Center. Frank was born in Albany to Antonio and Caterina (Cari-Cari) Futia. A Navy veteran of World War II, Frank proudly served in the South Pacific Bikini Islands as an aviation mechanic. He was a member of the American Legion Blanchard Post 1040, Delmar V.F.W. Post, and Bethlehem Elks. Following his Navy service, Frank and his two brothers founded their general contracting business, J.N. Futia Company, from which he retired in 1986. He was dedicated to his work and was a lifetime member of the UA Local 7, Plumbers and Steamfitters Union. Additionally, Frank was co-owner of the Coliseum Theater, where he often enjoyed interacting with countless celebrities and performers. More recently, Frank enjoyed playing shuffleboard with friends at the Legion, reading, gardening, and watching The History Channel. He had a fondness for lunching at the Riverfront Cafe (the barge) as well as the Homefront Cafe in Altamont where he would browse over all of the memorabilia. Frank was predeceased by his loving wife of 56 years, Anna M. (Schwab) Futia. He enjoyed their many trips abroad before her passing in 2004. Frank is survived by his sons, Anthony (Donna) Futia, and Marc (Elisa) Futia; daughters, Regina (Jim) Boyle, Annmarie (Barry Eckhart) Seaburg, and Florence (Donald) Futia Fruehwirth; sister, Pearl (Nick) Sparagna; and brother-in-law, Joseph (Edith) Schwab. Frank is also survived by his grandchildren, Jessica (Shawn), Sarah, Raymond, Matthew, Michael, and Erica; and great-grandchildren, Talia, Matthew, Nicholas, Jonathon, Cassandra, and Katrina and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Frank is predeceased by his brothers, Joseph and James; as well as his sisters, Mona, Rose, Angie, Jane, and Ann. The family would like to give a special thanks to the Medical staff teams at the Stratton VA Medical Center for all of their care and compassion given to Frank. A heartfelt thank you to Sr. Mary Frederick for her continued support to the Futia Family over the years. Funeral services from the Durant Funeral Home, 741 Delaware Ave. Delmar, on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. and from St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Place, Delmar, at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 4-8 p.m. Interment will be in the Bethlehem Cemetery. Reggie, Anthony, Ann, Flo and Marc, You are in our thoughts and prayers. I remember all the fun times as kids we had each Sunday driving out to Bender Lane (or even earlier on Charles Blvd) after Mass. Uncle Hermie sure knew how to get a good time going. Remember the antique car, clam bakes in your yard and of course, the crazy Coliseum days? We still have our pictures and memories. Love to all.

I will always remember the impromptu gatherings every Sunday at your house when we took our after Mass ride to Bender Lane. Uncle Hermie always knew how to get everyone laughing. I remember the cherished rides in his antique car, the family clam bakes, and the crazy Coliseum days. I am grateful for the endless pictures and memories. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Much Love.
