Francis Strasser Obituary

Strasser, Francis X. ALBANY Francis Xavier Strasser, 71, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at St. Peter's Hospice Inn. Mr. Strasser was born in Manhattan of German immigrant parents. In 1957, he received an associate degree in applied science from Westchester Community College. After two years' service as a criminal investigator in the U.S. Army, he joined the New York State Police in 1963. He and Theresa Anne Coyne were married in 1966. He completed his bachelor's degree in criminal justice at John Jay College, City University of New York, in 1968, and master's degree requirements in 1970. He embarked on doctoral research at the State University of New York at Albany on a three-year department of justice research fellowship, receiving a second master's degree there in 1973. Promoted to sergeant in the New York State Police in 1972, he served as assistant project director for the New York State Police's Job Analysis detail, based at the New York State Police Academy in Albany, N.Y. from 1973-76. While a member of the state police, he also became a volunteer announcer at the public radio station WMHT, and was the host of the classical music program "Through the Night." He retired from the state police in 1984, but continued to teach criminal justice as adjunct faculty at the Schenectady County Community College for many years. In September 2008, in recognition of his decades of devotion to all things rose-related, he received the Outstanding Judge Award of the New York District of the American Rose Society. He enjoyed writing, publishing many horticultural articles and working on a mystery novel; he was also an avid world traveler. Francis is survived by his wife of 43 years, Theresa Coyne Strasser; two children, Joel Francis Strasser and Dina Elizabeth Strasser (Colin Pritchard); two grandchildren, Rebecca and Ian Pritchard; his brother, John Strasser (Jeanne), and sisters Margaret Sheehan (James), Elizabeth Strasser (Esteban Silvera), and Anne Leonard (Donald). Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Pl., Delmar. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Rd., Albany, NY 12205.

A memory from a long time ago..(in the 1940's).. as children in the apartment above the bicycle shop in Yorkville we played Mass. Hansi was the priest and Franzie was altar boy. Helena and I, were the congregation. Afterwards, we had fun playing hide and seek and I remeber Bertl playing the piano.
My thoughts are with you.
Much Love, Elsie

Theresa, John, Margaret, Elizabeth & Annie It is with much sadness to hear of the passing away of Frank. I wasn't aware that he was so ill. Can't seem real that life ends so quickly. What a wonderful testimony of his life. I have fond memories of Frank and the Strasser family when he lived in Carmel and will never forget that I spent my 21st birthday with Frank. I am sorry I am not able to be with you at this time and happy that I was able to spend some time with all of you at your mothers mass. All my love and thoughts.

Dear John, Margret, Anne, Terry, Dina & Joel, I send my deepest sympathies for your loss. My Mom & Dad (Isabelle & Ed) were close with Mr. & Mrs. Strasser, all through their lives & I have found memories of visits with the family while growing up. My mom was a big fan of roses also. Wishing you all the best. Eddie

Dear Terry, Joel, and Dina,

Although I've known how ill Frank has been, it doesn't seem possible he passed away. He was so full of vitality!
I remember his stories about his travel, the state police, his love and knowledge of music, his cowboy hat, his love of family, and - of course - those amazing desserts! What great Thanksgivings we shared...And - I didn't know about the roses!
My love and sympathy to all of you.

Dina,
Our deepest sympathies and love. We have been praying with you and for your family during these weeks and continue to pray now. Your dad was a wonderful inspiring presence whenever he entered a room. He was so much fun during the production of Gypsy and I loved his laugh.

Frank was not just a great announcer in the overnight hours at WMHT-FM years ago; he was also a great guy who stood up to the corrupt management of that station.

He was a passionate music-lover whom I saw several times each season at the Union College Chamber Music Series, and was always happy and cheerful and a great pleasure to talk to. A fine friend.

We'll miss you, Frank, especially overnights when the programming at 89.1 FM stinks.

Frank was a wonderful neighbor to my family and always there to help -- even during our times of losing loved ones to the higher side. Prayers of peace are being sent to the family. You can be proud for such a wonderful husband, father, and relative. Surely he is being rewarded on the other side for all the good he did for so many on the earth plane. Much love to all of you.

I'm organizing old photos and only yesterday came across some from that visit my family made to you so many years ago, when our children (and we) were so young. My heart is breaking for you all, dearest Terry. I can only imagine the hole Frank's death leaves in your lives. He no longer needs our prayers but you, Joel, Dina and all of your family and friends are in mine, that you find strength ... and peace. Love,

Theresa,Dina and Joel,
I knew Frank as he would come into my Travel Agency to book his trips. What a great guy. Frank always came in with a big smile,he was always happy. Frank enjoyed traveling the world. I remember he was always excited if Joel was going with him. He loved showing Joel the world. He would always stop in to tell me about his trips and show me his pictures.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Brother dear, I love you and will miss you so much. You have enriched all those who had the pleasure of knowing you. You have a beautiful family and a lovely and devoted wife. All of you have taught us the way to live. I only wish you did not have to leave us so soon. The Strasser clan will never be the same. Love, Annie, die kleinste. One beautful rose, you, have left us.
