Harvey Sutton Obituary

Sutton, Dr. Harvey
ALBANY - Dr. Harvey Sutton was born to the late Sam and Henrietta Suckno on September 11, 1917, in Albany. He died on June 14, 2023, at the age of 105.
He attended public schools in Albany and, after serving in the military, remained a lifelong resident. Harvey completed his pre-dental studies at the Albany College of Pharmacy and in 1939 entered the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry. He graduated with a D.D.S. degree in 1943.
During World War II, Harvey entered the Army Air Force as a dental surgeon with the 365th Fighter Bomber Group achieving the rank of captain prior to discharge. He was originally stationed in England but then participated in the invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach in France. He also served in Belgium and Germany.
Upon discharge from the military, Harvey became a member of the dental staff at Albany Medical Center, and later at Child's Hospital and Memorial Hospital. In 1947 he opened his own dental office in Albany and practiced there until 1972. That year he moved his office to the former train station in Altamont, where he practiced until his retirement in 1994.
Harvey was active in dental affairs and was a former president of the Third District Dental Society. He was a member of the Freemasons for over 75 years where he held several offices in his local Masonic Lodge #85. He was also active in the Jewish War Veterans of America Post #105, including being a former post commander. After retirement, Harvey volunteered in the pharmacy of the Albany V.A. Hospital.
As a youngster, Harvey studied classical piano, but he eventually discovered his true musical love - jazz. He played piano with many local jazz groups and continued playing while in dental school in Pittsburgh, in the Army, and throughout his adult life. He was a very talented and entertaining musician.
In his later years, Harvey became interested in sculptural ceramics and attended classes at Skidmore College. He became quite prolific and creative with his ceramic creations, winning awards and exhibiting in several regional venues.
Harvey had two brothers and two sisters who predeceased him. Survivors include his dear wife, Helene; daughter, Sandra Anastasi (George); and granddaughter, Derika. He also leaves his loving step-family - Warren (Jeanne), Michael (Denise), and David (Hazel) Greene and their children and grandchildren.
Burial was entrusted to Levine Memorial Chapel, with interment in the Independent Benevolent Society Cemetery on Fuller Road in Albany.
