Marion Sharpe Garbalinski Obituary

Sharpe Garbalinski, Marion ROCHESTER Marion Sharpe Garbalinski joined her husband Walter on December 28, 2012. She experienced a stroke (aneurism) during the night and was taken to Unity Hospital in Rochester, where she passed away 16 hours later. Marion was energetic, feisty, passionate, adventurous, and challenging to the end, which came much too soon. Happy to report, her last nine days included eating lunch out every day and spending time with granddaughter Angelina two of her favorite things. She also ate lunch at Jack's Oyster House in Albany on her way to the train on December 17. Thank you Steve; Jack's and the Desmond were her favorites. A well known fine arts portrait painter, with studios in Kennebunkport, Maine, Nantucket, Mass., and Virginia, Marion's clients include politicians, CEO's, university presidents, and her portraits grace homes from Maine to Miami to Switzerland. She is predeceased by her parents, William and Gladys (Bryant) Potter of Albany; her son, Peter G. Sharpe III; sister, Elizabeth Homiller; and husband, Walter Garbalinski. She is survived by two sons, David (Mary) of Nantucket and Andrew (Sue) of Golden, Colo.; cousins, Marcia (Bob) Luther, Barbara Henderer, both of Albany, and Joanne Sieminski of California; also nephews, Bill (Elizabeth and Jake) and John Homiller. In addition, she leaves a close group of lifelong friends from Maine to Florida (including Doris, Kay, Janice, Betty, Sylvia, Hoeie, Bernie, Frank, George, Melissa, the Slingerlands and Bishop Ball). Thanks to Marcia, Andy, Ingrid, Joe, Maria, Dan and her doctors for your care. Marion left an impressive legacy of memories and to share these, there will be an informal spring celebration of her life. So bring your stories (politically correct not required or possible!) and we will give both Marion and Wally a royal send-off. For date and place, please send your address and/or email to S.Sharpe, 5-C Salmon Run, Hilton, NY 14468. Start looking for pictures for the memory wall, too.

I stumbled upon this obituary today and wanted to offer my condolences, albeit nine years after Marion passed, with a photo of a prized portrait that she created of me, in Kennebunkport, in the late Sixties.

Dear Marion and her family,
To this day I miss you and think of you often. You were a light in my life and we became friends through you painting my 3 children. A cherished painting to this day.

You were independent, loving and so original. I loved your nature and your energy. I was so lucky to have you spend a week with me before you went on to visit Angelina!

You are forever missed and loved by me.

Marion is someone who I loved spending time with, as she was always planning or doing something interesting. I met her 22 years ago on Nantucket when she first painted a portrait of my three children. She grew to know all of them well and over the years always asked about their lives.

She spent a week with me on Nantucket two weeks before her death and we talked, ate out at her favorite spots and shared many memories together as I drove her around the Island.

I will miss knowing that she will not be back to Nantucket and share it with me. She was special to me and I learned so much from her. Such a grand, talented lady who I respected and loved.

I will miss you Marion, but I know you will still be with me on the Island and I may even see your shadow at the easel in your Nantucket studio when I pass by.
