Martin Schumacher Obituary

Schumacher, Martin Joseph
TROY - Martin Joseph Schumacher, 80, passed away early Thursday morning, February 2, 2023.
Born in Utica on February 8, 1942, he was the son of the late George and Delsie (Pudvak) Schumacher. Martin grew up in Utica where he attended St. Patrick's Grammar School and graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree from Boston State College and his master's degree from SUNY Albany. He also served his country proudly as a member of the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Kearsarge during the Vietnam War.
Martin had a long, distinguished career as an educator. He was a teacher for 19 years at the St. James School in Albany and Catholic Central High School in Troy, where he taught social studies and theology, until his retirement in 2006. In his free time, Martin enjoyed traveling, tending to his garden, and dedicating himself to his volunteer work at St. Peter's Hospital. He was an intelligent man who even co-authored his own book, "The Murder at Cherry Hill." Martin will certainly be remembered and missed by many former students and current friends.
Martin is survived by his life partner and dear friend of over 40 years, Anthony Behan of Troy, many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews; and his friend and caretaker, June Behan and Patsy Wixson. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Eldin Schumacher, Gordon Schumacher, George Schumacher, Bellevene Whipple, Delsie Baker, Marie Szablak, and June Schumacher; and by his cherished friend, Paul Ciano Jr.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Martin's birthday, Wednesday, February 8, at 12 p.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Troy, with interment to follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Troy. All are invited to visit before the service, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Parker Bros. Memorial Funeral Home, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Martin in a special way may consider a donation to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Ave., Menands, NY, 12204.
