Loren Broadus Obituary
Loren Arthur Broadus, Jr., died on August 25, 2018, in Saint Augustine, FL. Services will be held at Crestwood Christian Church in Lexington, KY, on Saturday, September 1, at 11:00 A.M.
Loren was born in Providence, KY, on Feb. 5, 1928, to Mescal and Loren A. Broadus, Sr. He grew up in Jacksonville, FL, where he attended Andrew Jackson High School. At Jackson, Loren was an extraordinary, record-setting athlete in football and track. He continued his success in these two sports at the University of Florida and was captain of the football team his senior year.
After college, Loren served in the Florida National Guard as Commanding Officer of the 149th Quartermasters. In the mid-1950s Loren attended Lexington Theological Seminary. During his long ministry in the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, he served as pastor and on both the staff and faculty of the seminary. He also authored a number of books; the most famous one, Laughing and Crying With Little League, he co-authored with his wife Catherine.
He was preceded in death by his wife Catherine Yonge Broadus. He is survived by sons Mark (Shannon) of Saint Augustine, FL; Barry (Gina) of Lexington, KY; and Philip (Lisa) of Tempe, AZ and three grandchildren Christian, James, and Bailey. He is also survived by one brother Andy Broadus (Linda) of Arlington, TX, and a number of nephews and other extended family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass.

My thoughts and prayers are with Lorens family. I recall fond memories of him at LTS where my father and Loren were colleagues and also playing golf Loren and his son, Barry. In celebration and deepest sympathies.

Family of a very special man: Homer and I went to school with Loren. He was our hero! We loved Loren and Catherine. My pleasure each summer was when they visited Jacksonville. I took pleasure in making them a pound cake during their visit. They lived the beach . I was so happy to take Catherine to our Jackson/Jill's luncheon. Sincere condolences.

I was in the first grade with Andy and recall, even then, the pride we all felt in Loren's accomplishments. He obviously went on to achieve success beyond the athletic field and made a meaningful contribution with his life's work. My condolences to Andy and the other members of the Broadus family.

Sorry for the loss of Mr. Broadus. He was an excellent man and leader. He and my father (Rev. Phil Williams) were good friends. The Disciples of Christ have lost two of the best recently.
