In the pre-dawn peacefulness on Monday, October 27th, Kathleen O'Neil, age 81, passed from this life in Islamorada, Florida, a place she held deeply in her heart. Katie lived her life on her own terms, and her passing was no different; the time and place almost seemed to be of her choosing.

An absolute gardening queen, she loved being outdoors and she was never so happy as when wearing gardening gloves and working in her flower beds. Her gardens were absolute showstoppers, and always looked like a bright, beautiful page out of a magazine. She adored looking out into her backyard, counting the deer, and naming the different birds that came to her feeder. In her earlier years she also loved fishing and had her picture posted in a local Islamorada restaurant with one of her epic catches. And world traveling was another passion of Katie's, with Costa Rica and Paris being some of her recent favorite journeys.

Katie's background in nursing, and her passion for helping people, prepared her well for her critical volunteer role at David's House, an AIDS service organization based in Toledo. Her compassion and zeal assisted leadership there with ongoing counseling, education and housing for hundreds of victims of this terrible disease.

Katie was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Ann and Sarah; her brother, Norman Jr.; and tragically her beautiful daughter, Gert (Steve). She is survived by her brother, John; sons, Kevin (Ann) and Pat (Cindy); her daughter, Bridget (Walt); 7 grandchildren; approximately 500 orchids she couldn't stop buying; and her ageless parrot, Max.
