Robert G. Waltenbaugh

1942 - 2021

Robert G. "Bob" Waltenbaugh, formerly of Apollo, passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021, at Hospice Northwest Ohio, in Toledo, Ohio. Born Oct. 7, 1942, in Kittanning, he was the son of Roy and Agnes (Dougherty) Waltenbaugh. Bob grew up in Apollo, graduating from Apollo High School in 1960. He attended Clarion University and graduated from IUP with a master's degree in education and mathematics. Bob taught high school mathematics at Leechburg Area High School, retiring from teaching after 30 years. He moved to Toledo, Ohio, in 1995, where he worked for another 22 years at Paramount Health Care, in Maumee, Ohio, retiring in February 2020. Bob had been an avid long-distance runner, qualifying and running the Boston Marathon multiple times. He organized a running club in Pennsylvania and was fondly referred to as "The Legend" by fellow runners as he spent many years competing in road races and mentoring new runners. In Toledo, Bob was active as a volunteer at the Stranahan Theater, the Toledo Humane Society, WGTE and sang with the Toledo Choral Society and First Congregational Choir under Sam Szor. Bob supported the Toledo Zoo and Toledo Symphony. He loved music and enjoyed hearing his grandsons play guitar, piano, violin and upright bass. Bob is survived by his sweetheart, Donna (Beatty) Waltenbaugh, whom he married in 1963; daughter, Amy (Randy) Gross, of Toledo, Ohio, son, William (Heidi) Waltenbaugh, of Orchard Park, N.Y.; grandsons, Cole and Bryce Robertson, and granddaughter, Sasha Gross, all of Ohio, Luke, Ryan, Austin, Josh and Caleb Waltenbaugh, of Orchard Park, N.Y., a great-granddaughter; a sister, Sandra (Sam) Hess, of Gilpin Township, Leechburg; a great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Stewart, and a nephew, both of Framingham, Mass. No viewing or services were held at Bob's request.
