Vernon Ammons Obituary

Vernon G. Ammons, Ph.D., 89, of Hampton, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at Covenant at South Hills, Scott. He was born Sept. 3, 1917, in Akron, Ohio, a son of the late George and Mildred Alexander. He was a research chemist for Pittsburgh Plate Glass Industries, Harmarville. He was a World War II veteran, having served as a captain during World War II; and a member of North Hills Christian Church, Thompson Run Road, and the American Chemical Society. He was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and earned a doctorate in chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University (Carnegie Institute of Technology.) He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary E. (Gormley) Ammons; one son, Thomas V. (Janet) Ammons, of Hampton; two daughters, Ann E. (Jerry) Loud, of Coraopolis, and Doris M. (Ed) Hardesty, of Ohio Township; also six grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at KYPER FUNERAL HOME, 2702 Mt. Royal Blvd., Shaler. Funeral service at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Terry Lutz, of North Hills Christian Church, officiating. Interment in Mt. Royal Cemetery, Shaler. Memorial contributions may be made to North Hills Christian Church, 778 Thompson Run Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237.
