Dr. John E. Gallagher Jr.

Dr. John E. Gallagher Jr., 83, of Valencia, formerly of Apollo, died Sunday (May 4, 2003) in UPMC Passavant Hospital, McCandless.

Born Feb. 29, 1920, in Apollo, he lived there until 2000. He was a graduate of Penn State University and Thomas Jefferson Medical School, Philadelphia. Dr. Gallagher was a physician in the Apollo area for 46 years before retiring in 1991. He was a member of the American Medical Association, American Family Physicians, Pennsylvania Medical Society and the Armstrong County Medical Society. Survivors include his wife, Emily Kearney Hartman Gallagher; two stepsons, Richard W. Hartman II of Centerville, Va., and Thomas W. Hartman of West Lake, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Sissy Stallings of West Covina, Calif.; eight stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren. He also is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Richards Gallagher in 1985; his parents, John E. and Velora Owens Gallagher; and a sister, Mary Miner. There will be no public visitation or services. A private family service was conducted at CURRAN-SHAFFER FUNERAL HOME INC., 100 Owens Drive, Apollo, by the Rev. John Sweeney. Private burial was in Riverview Cemetery, Apollo.
