Richard Moen Obituary

Richard Moen
March 12, 2020
Richland, Washington - Richard "Dick" Moen passed away on March 12, 2020. He grew up in Miller SD helping his parents at their grocery store. He was active in Boy Scouts earning the rank of Eagle, canoed the Boundary Waters, attended the National Jamboree, and continued with Scouting leadership in Idaho Falls and Richland. Dick married his high school sweetheart Mary Jo Bridenbaugh and graduated as a Metallurgical Engineer from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology (1962). They moved to Idaho Falls where he worked at the National Reactor Testing Station and later to Richland at the Fast Flux Test Facility and Energy NW.
Dick and Mary Jo raised three sons. He took pride in their achievement of Eagle Scout rank, summiting Mt Adams with him, and of their academic pursuits.
Dick was an active member and past president of the local chapter of ASM. He served on the ASME Main Code committee, helped develop the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, and published various material selection references. Dick's retirement projects included authoring and teaching the Materials Selection handbook known as the "Moen Index". Dick's personal interests included genealogy, rock hounding, gardening, puzzles of all sorts, ESL tutoring, and spending time with friends and family, including European bicycle tours. It was hard to ever beat him at cards and his garden and "zucchini monster" creations were famous in the neighborhood.
Richard is survived by his wife, three sons, and five grandchildren.
A private family memorial service was held at Ingalls Creek Enrichment Center June 5th, 2021.

Dick was a very nice person to work with. I was fairly new in my career when I met Dick. He had the spirit of a teacher.
