William Estes Obituary

William A. Estes, Jr. Passed away at home early on Sunday morning August 9, 2009. He was born in Everett, Washington in 1938 to William and Jean Estes, both deceased. He moved to Tucson in 1943 and attended Tucson Public schools. At the University of Arizona he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha and graduated in 1961. Upon graduation, he received his commission in the Army as a Second Lt. He married his wife, Shirley August 17, 1960. They had three children, William III (KC), Joel, and Leah (J.K. Baker). After serving in the Army, Bill joined his father in the family home-building business, Estes Homes. During his 40+year career his company built more than 40,000 new homes in Tucson, Phoenix, and Sierra Vista. His company also developed the Midvale Park, Ventana Canyon and La Reserve master planned communities as well as Loews Ventana Canyon Resort. Besides his business interests he was involved in many Civic organizations including the Conquistadors, Southern Arizona Home Builders Association, the Urban Land Institute, and a long time member of Saguaro Christian Church. After selling his company in 1999 he became passionate about improving public education. He chaired the Blue Ribbon Committee for TUSD, served on the Arizona State School Board, and founded the Wildcat School, a Charter school on the south side of Tucson. Bill was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree by the U of A in 2006 and was Father of the year in 1999. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Kelly, Shannon, William IV, Zara and Zack and his father-in-law, Everette Vanskike. Besides being a successful businessman, Bill was a devoted family man, civic leader, philanthropist, lifelong U of A sports fan and will be deeply missed. The family is grateful for the compassionate care provided by Bayada Nurses and Bill's caregiver, Aaron Rivera. A Celebration of his life will be held at Loews Ventana Canyon, Friday, August 14, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to his vision, the Wildcat School, which recently moved to 25 E.
