I can't believe it's been a year since her passing. I think of her often, and I'm grateful she had such a long life that brought her joy.

The very first time I met Betty (Perky) she made me feel at home. She welcomed me not as a stranger but as family (Virginia's son-in-law) and was always kind and thoughtful. Whenever I see Patsy I recognize in her the care and concern for others that she inherited from Perky. Patsy and Greg took great care of Perky during her last years. Perky deserved no less. She was a family treasure.

My mother called her sister Perky instead of Betty, so that's what I grew up calling her, too. One of my very earliest memories was when she took Peggy, Patsy, and me downtown on the streetcar to see "Pinocchio". I don't remember a thing about seeing the film, just waiting for the streetcar and going to sleep on the floor really late with my cousins. A big night out for a four year-old. For several years every May, I had my mother, Perky, and my Aunt Susie over for lunch. They all had memories of their childhoods and teen years, and those lunches were always special to me. My aunt, like all the Perrymans I ever knew, was a natural gardener, and today I have her lilac bushes in my garden. She loved to shop as well, and often came home with collections she "stored." I benefited from this habit with a trove of blue and white china pieces which I treasure still. Perky and my mother traveled together until my mother's health failed, and then it was Perky who helped care for her when my brother, sister and I were all still working and needed help. I'm very grateful for that. After my mother died, it was Perky who gave me advice about how to go forward without trying trying to do things exactly as she had. I was 61 when my mother died, but I still needed advice from a wise aunt, and I've never forgotten that conversation.
Her children took such good care of her in her last years, and we never get used to the loss of our parents. But they can be sure of the consolation of many memories and loving care for her.
