Sally Dawson Obituary

LIVINGSTON Sally Beatrice Dawson, age 83, departed her life Sunday morning, Aug. 26, 2007, at Hill Hospital in York after an extended illness. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Livingston with Rev. Samuel Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Johnson Cemetery with McInnis Mortuary of Livingston directing. Visitation will be today from 1 to 6 p.m. at the mortuary and one hour prior to services at the church.

Sally Beatrice Dawson was born June 15, 1924, in Livingston, Alabama. Sally was full of life and enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, talking on the CB, cooking, reading, talking to people and making laughter. She accepted Christ and joined the Johnson Baptist Church in Livingston.

Sally received her elementary and high school education in the public schools in Sumter County. She received her B.S. and Masters degrees from Alabama State University in Montgomery. She also studied at Boston University for Secondary Certification and entered the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa during the summer of 1973. Later she received her AA degree.

She was a member of various organizations, including life membership in the NEA, member of Kappa Delta Pi Fraternity, XI Chapter, AEA, National Council for Social Education, Sumter County Classroom Teachers Association, The Sumter County Retired Teachers Association, The National Rifle Association, and was part of the Civil Rights Movement. She supported various charities, such as The Hannah House, The Boys and Girls Club, The Salvation Army, and The Fraternal Order of Sheriffs and Police.

Sally taught school for 44 years. She served as a basketball coach, math teacher and social studies teacher during her years of teaching. She retired in 1988 from York West Jr. High School.

Survivors include her son, Eddie Dawson (Marie); one granddaughter, Pamela Y. Dawson; three sisters, Mary J. Dawson, Jeanette Richardson and Mattie Hall; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
