Joan Shepard Obituary

Shepard, Joan Therese Wise, courageous, dramatic, and much-loved Joany Age 64, died June 9, 2009, after a journey with cancer. Preceded in death by her father, Gordon Shepard, she is survived by her mother, Jeanne Newhall Shepard, sisters Sybil (John) Eakin and Charlotte (Ward) Johnson, brother John (Suzanne Brust) Shepard, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, as well as dear friends and neighbors in River Falls, WI. Joany attended Summit School, Villa Maria Academy, Loretto Heights College, and University of WI-River Falls, where she ranged hungrily through the disciplines. From her spiritual home at St. Bridget Catholic Church, she drew on thought, word, song, dance, and deed to touch the lives of scores of parishioners, family and friends. The many in River Falls who provided help and support in her illness include members of families for whom Joany served as a dedicated and loving nanny. A celebration of Joany's life was held on Friday. Memorials may be made to St. Bridget Church, River Falls, WI.

I met Joany during my time in River Falls last year. I watched her talk about God and could see her joy in loving Him with abandon. I want to be that way, and she showed me how beautiful it is to love and be loved by Him!

I am so sorry for your loss. I arrrived at St B's in February 2000 shortly after moving from the Twin Cities when I met my future wife. I found the parish filled with love and passion for our Savior and Joan brought that passion by her voice, both singing and in reading. I have since moved to Colorado and terribly miss my "adopted parish" and it was with a heavy heart I heard of Joan's passing on a visit back "home" two weeks ago. I know she is singing and dancing with the angels and smiling down on all of us.

I am so sorry about the illness and death of a young class mate. I'm sure she is at peace and may warm and fond memories help all of you during this time of grieving. there is no time limit on this time so just be gentle and patient with yourselves. It is good to see Joan's smiling face in the picture. Memories of class of 1964. Ellen Appel Stelling

To Joany's loved ones,
I was unable to attend the funeral today, I wanted you to know, we will miss the lovely woman who was always softly moving in her church pew. I want to love the Lord as Joany did, with the heart of a child. She will be dearly missed at St. Bridget's!

Dear Mrs. Shepard and family members of Joany.

I just got word of your great loss of a loving woman and want to add my prayers for you at the time of sorrow. Her smiling face on this photo is a reminder of her pleasant personality that I remember from teaching her at Villa Maria in Frontenac. May God bless you all with strength and courage as you give her back to her God. I'm sure she will get a big welcome.

John and Shepard family. My deepest sympathy for your loss. The lifelong relationship with a beloved sibling molds how we are in the world and who we have become…..she is a part of you still. May the loving comfort of friends and family ease her passing.
