EXETER -- Virgil E. Harris, 85, died Nov. 6, 2009, at his home.
He was born July 15, 1924, in Garden Grove, Calif., to Farris and Julia A. (Tripp) Harris. He was raised in California.
He was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II and the Korean War.
He moved to Exeter in 1963, where he worked for Phillips Exeter Academy, drove truck across country, and worked for the Town of Exeter at the Water Treatment Plant .
He and his wife, Barbara, enjoyed traveling, square dancing and round dancing. He was a member of the Exeter United Methodist Church. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Family members include his wife of 56 years, Barbara A. (Marcotte) Harris of Exeter; three sons, Randy S. Harris of Chichester, and Ron G. Harris and Rick A. Harris, both of Exeter; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Rachel Balch of Alaska; and several nieces and nephews.
SERVICES: Services will be held at the Exeter United Methodist Church, Rte, 27, Saturday at 11 a.m. Calling hours are Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Burial will be in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen.
Memorial donations may be made to Exeter United Methodist Church.

Virgil was a quiet and gentle man. He was a giant in kindness and likeability. He will be sorely missed by family as well as friends. Our prayers are with you all as you celebrate the life of a good man.
