Walter Davis Obituary

Walter E. 'Buzz' Davis, Jr.
St. Johnsville
Mr. Walter E. "Buzz" Davis, Jr., 81, of North Division Street, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, November 27, 2008, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, following a brief illness. At the time of his passing his entire family was offering love and support. Buzz was born on March 10, 1927, in Inghams Mills, son of the late Walter E. Davis, Sr., and Elizabeth D. (Sleezer), and graduated from St. Johnsville High School. On August 14, 1954, Buzz was united in marriage with Ruthanna (Walts) in Fort Plain Methodist Church; a union of 44 years, until the passing of Mrs. Davis on May 29, 1999. A proud Veteran, Mr. Davis served with the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Davis' last professional employment was with New York State Department of Transportation as an engineer. He was the former owner and operator of Davis Clothing Store in St. Johnsville and also worked as a butcher for Smith's Market in his earlier years. Mr. Davis was very community minded holding memberships with the following organizations: St. Johnsville American Legion Post #168, St. Johnsville Masonic Lodge #611, serving one time as mastrr mason, St. Johnsville Volunteer Fire Department, serving as past fire chief, St. Johnsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps., where he served on the board of directors, served as Justice of the Peace and St. Johnsville town clerk during the early 1960's, was past president of the H.C. Smith Benefit Club, and was extremely active with the Grace Christian Church, where he served as trustee. Mr. Davis loved baseball and played for the St. Johnsville Saints. As evident, Buzz put the needs of others before his own and will be sadly missed by his family and friends in St. Johnsville and surrounding areas. His family was his biggest source of pride and satisfaction and was never happier then when spending time with his cherished grandchildren. Survivors include his loving family: his son, Walter "Buzz" Davis and wife, MaryAnn, of St. Johnsville; a daughter, Mary "Elizabeth" Davis, of Waterville; a brother, Gordon Davis, of St. Johnsville; a sister, Caroline Hayes and husband, John, of St. Johnsville; three cherished grandchildren, Richard Davis and wife, Megan, of Philadelphia, PA, and Michael Davis and Michelle Davis, both of St. Johnsville; two adored grand-dogs, Morgan and Rigs; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Herbert, Isabelle Marino, Margaret Hastings and Susie Davis. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, on Sunday, November 30, 2008, from 3-6 p.m. His funeral will commence on Monday, December 1, 2008, at 10:15 from the chapel of the funeral home and at 11 a.m. from Grace Christian Church, 20 Center St., St. Johnsville, with the Rev. David A. Johnson, Pastor, officiating. Procession will follow to Freysbush Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest. The following organizations will conduct services at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon: St. Johnsville American Legion Post #68 at 3:30 p.m; St. Johnsville Masonic Lodge #611 at 4:00 p.m. and the St. Johnsville Volunteer Fire Department at 4:30 p.m. Kindly consider honoring Buzz's memory with a contribution to the H.C. Smith Benefit Club of St. Johnsville or to the Masonic Lodge # 611; donations may be made at the funeral home where envelopes are available as well.
