Kathryn Dempsey Obituary

". . . how beautiful a day can be when kindness touches it . . ." Kathy Dempsey knew both beauty and kindness in large doses throughout her life. Her delightful smile and warm personality belied her four year long struggle with colon cancer. On Friday, August 4, 2017 Kathy died of the disease at her sister, Karen's home in Milford . . . but in the end, love won and the cancer lost. She was 52. She worked for years as a waitress at the Naked Fish restaurant in Waltham and devoted all of her time to being a great mother to her children, Amanda and Aidan. The past year brought unimaginable sadness to the family, first with the sudden loss of Karen's husband, Rob, and a month later Amanda and Aidan's dad, Steven Wenckus, died suddenly as well. The tragic events brought the family closer than ever with three generations of a family circling the wagons to help one another. Kathy never had to endure a hard chemo treatment without her sister Karen holding her hand . . . the kids grew beyond their years . . . and Dad and Mom, Jack and Joan, facing challenges of their own, always there to lend support where they could. It also helped that Kathy had a wonderful and kind and generous group of friends, most dating back to childhood and her teen years, and who always let her know that she was never alone. She called them 'Kathy's Angels' . . . and that's what they are. Kathryn M. Dempsey was born in Cambridge on February 14, 1965, a daughter of John J. "Jack" and Joan M. (Gilreath) Dempsey. She was a lifelong resident of Waltham and graduated from Waltham High School in 1983. In addition to her parents, Jack and Joan, of Waltham she leaves her children, Amanda L. and Aidan A. Wenckus; her sister, Karen M. Harnett of Milford and her nephew and niece, Michael and Abigail Harnett. Family and friends will honor and remember Kathy's life by gathering for calling hours in the Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, August 9th, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham, where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am. Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to: www.gofundme.com/ amanda-and-aidan To offer condolences online, please visit www.JoyceFuneralHome.com

So sad thinking about Kathy's passing. My heart breaks for her amazing family and friends who love her so much and made her life so special, as Kathy did for them. I have fond memories of going dancing with Kathy at The 9 where she always literally dressed to the nines. Rest in peace, beautiful angel.

I graduated with Kathy in the Class of 1983, she was a very friendly, funny and all around great person. I am so sorry for all of her family and friends, such a terrible loss of such a beautiful person. I now live in Florida, and would have been there if I could have. Thoughts and prayers to everyone in this difficult time,

Growing up in the old neighborhood, I kind of looked at Kathy as an older sister figure. She always had words to pick you up when you were down. And spent countless hours trying to teach me to dance The Hustle after school at Jean Baima's house. I have many fond memories of her. Although I have not seen much of Kathy over the years, when I did on occasion, she struck me as the same warm person I had known as a kid. Forever a positive word for everybody that crossed her path. A lovely and constant smile. When she told a joke, it didn't matter if it was good or bad, as her own laughter would make me laugh. She always made me feel special. I wish I had told her this.

Karen (and family) ..I am in complete awe of your courage and strength. I know if I opened the dictionary today in search of the definition of INSPIRATION, I would find a picture of Karen and Kathy Dempsey beside the word. My heart aches for you and the entire family at this time. You are all forever in my prayers. OXOX

I met Kathy 25 years ago thru Brenda (Chiasson) Lichter.
She was a beam of light, full of mischief and such a beautiful Spirit.
Every time I saw her, she had a smile on her face, a funny story to tell and was always dressed in style and fashion.
She was a lady, she was a rare gem, she knew how to celebrate life. Kathy was special.
So, today although your soul is heavy, your tears are many... we should celebrate Kathy's life and the fact that we were all blessed to have had her in ours.
All good thoughts and prayers going out to Kathy's children, family and friends.
I know that you will feel her absence... but, remember to keep her in your heart and she will surround you forever.

I sat across from Kathy in homeroom in Junior High School - I think it was Mr. McClennan's homeroom. Kathy was always so well put together! I remember her big smile too. MANY years later I saw her at a Lakeview Reunion. She talked about her illness and how all she wanted was to spend a nice Christmas with her kids. Ever the fashionista - even in illness. Kathy - you gotta be in the designer section in heaven. No other spot would do you justice.. xo xo Charlene Cloney

I would like to take this time to tell a little story if I may. I use to go down the the Lakeview Ball Field and meet Kathy and her handsome son Aidan. I put my chair besides her and asked how the game was going. She said they weren't doing to good. When Aidan was up and bat and I yelled hit that ball across the field dude. Well guess what he knocked that ball clear across the field. Kathy goes OMG you brought him some luck. Everyone time he got up to bat he hit that sucked. She started to cry and said Yogi you brought him good luck. Huged me and Kissed me and everyone was happy. Stuff like that matters to us all and it is just what a friend would do. Love you honey

Hi. I went to Our Lady's with Kathy and later to Waltham High. Coming from a strict home Kathy looked like a rock star to me. She teased me mercilessly(in good fun) in High School and I was so infatuated with her that I loved sparring with her. (tragic geek) In 1983 she was most exciting and bold young woman I had ever met. We worked together one summer at The Chateau in our 30s and she had evolved into an elegant and beautiful super-mom. She really knew the power of transformation. She was an inteligent, hard worker and self taught. Kathy's magnetic personality and rebel spirit inspired people. The Dempsey sisters are true ladies and one of a kind. Thank you for the memories.
With love and prayers,

Michael (Murphy) Hollister
