BARBARA DAVIDSON Obituary
DAVIDSON BARBARA McCLENCH DAVIDSON Barbara McClench Davidson died peacefully at her residence in the Greenspring community in Springfield, VA, on November 27, 2021. She was 97 years old. Known as Bobbie to her family and friends, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 68 years, Commander Hubbell Y. Davidson, who died in 2013 and a beloved daughter, Christine D. Hohenstein, who passed in February 2021. Born in Springfield, MA, on October 4, 1924, Bobbie was a lively, adventurous child who loved being outdoors. That passion led her to scouting, snow skiing, and sailing. After being introduced to golf, she found a life-long love of the game and played into her 90s. She earned many competition trophies attesting to her devotion to and skill in the sport. Bobbie moved with her family to Annapolis, MD, in the late 1930s when her father, Donald McClench, became an instructor of navigation at the US Naval Academy. There she met a dashing midshipman from Hornell, NY, Hubbell Davidson, whom she married in 1945. Accompanying him to duty stations on the east coast and Kodiak, AK, she was afforded opportunities to serve in leadership roles in officers' wives clubs and women's groups of military chapels as well as the golf organization at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, VA. Bobbie also worked in several locations along the way, utilizing her well-honed secretarial and organizational skills. No matter where she lived, she became a devoted friend to many. Summer vacations throughout the years were most often spent at the Davidson family cottage on Loon Lake, a beautiful spot in western New York. Bobbie and Hubbell shared their time at the lake with their daughters and their growing families and friends, creating fond memories for all. Bobbie was the keeper of family records and heirlooms, dating back more than 150 years. She was and still is the treasured matriarch of her family: daughter Eleanor D. Hayden; grandchildren David Hayden, Patrick Hayden, Christine Hayden, and Raymond Hohenstein; and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service offered in her honor and inurnment at the US Naval Academy columbarium is being planned for 2022. Gifts in memory of Bobbie may be mailed to the Greenspring Village Inc. Benevolent Care Fund, 7430 Spring Village Drive, Springfield, VA 22150 or to the Army Navy Country Club Foundation, 1700 Army Navy Drive, Arlington, VA 22202.Gifts in memory of Bobbie may be mailed to the Greenspring Village Inc.
