On Sunday, October 27, 2002. Born April 18, 1944 in New York City, the son of Hugh J. and Mercedes Sullivan Murphy. Ed grew up in Port Chester, New York. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1962 and was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1966, having served with a Marine Aviation Wing.
After his discharge, he received a BA in Psychology from American University. He settled in the Washington area, most recently living in Rockville. Ed died suddenly while visiting his brother, Peter, in Delmar, NY. He is survived by brothers Hugh Kevin Murphy, Peter Murphy, sister Carol E. Murray and numerous, beloved nephews and nieces.
After graduating, Ed worked on Capitol Hill for Senator Cranston and then for several Trade Associations. He later started a contracting company, Cavan Corp., performing work throughout the area. He became actively involved in several youth and community service organizations including the Academy of Hope, Youth Build, Christmas in April, and Habitat for Humanity. Ed was a member of the Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church where he participated in numerous youth activities and mentoring programs. He also organized several recent missions involving community and facility building programs in Ecuador, and Bali, Indonesia. His illness last June forced him to postpone a planned mission trip to South Africa to establish a Youth Build Program there.
Ed will be sorely missed by his family, his students and his many friends, young and old, here and around the world. A Memorial Service will he held at Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church, 6601 Bradley Boulevard, Bethesda, MD on Friday, November 1, 2002, at 11 a.m.
