FREDERICK GANLEY Obituary

GANLEY FREDERICK WILLIAM GANLEY, JR. (Age 81) Of Arlington, VA, died peacefully at his home on January 11, 2018. He is survived by Natalie Tholl Ganley, his wife of 57 years, their four children, Terry and her spouse, Paula Williams, Mark and his wife, Brenda, Sheila Kelly and her husband, Peter, and Brigid Ahern and her husband, Ryan; as well as six grandchildren, Kevin, Matthew, Liam, Declan, Quentin and Natalie. He is also survived by his brother, Richard, and his wife, Elizabeth; and his brother-in-law, John Michael Tholl, and his wife, Micheline; and seven nieces and nephews. Born in Washington in 1936, Fred was a lifelong resident of Arlington, VA. He was a proud alumnus of Gonzaga College High School (1954). He graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering (1958) and earned a M.S. in Engineering Administration from George Washington University (1964). His curious and mechanically-minded nature sent him from the shipyards of Newport News, to the Department of the Army, the Department of the Navy, and then to the headquarters of the United States Postal Service, where he spent 21 years as a General Manager in the Office of Mail Classification. His passion for efficiency engendered many of the standard mailing practices used today. After his retirement in 1992, He turned his longtime gift for woodworking into making furniture and gifts. Helping friends and neighbors in numerous projects, he emerged as the Arlington Handyman. Fred was an avid golfer and sailed the Potomac and the Bay of Fundy. He will be missed by his friends and neighbors in Arlington and in Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia, where he vacationed and then spent summers for 46 years. He will be remembered fondly at Holy Trinity Church where he worshiped since his wedding there in 1960. A Funeral mass will be held on Friday, January 19, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 3513 N. St. NW, Washington, DC, 20007. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to one of Fred's favorite organizations: Gonzaga College High School or the Father McKenna Center. The address for both is: 19 Eye St NW, Washington, DC 20001-1425.
