Hugh Pitcher Obituary

PITCHER

HUGH PITCHER

Hugh Pitcher passed away in his sleep while suffering from late stage Parkinson's on July 14, 2022. Born in Buffalo, NY, he grew up in Chicago and attended Oberlin College where he competed in track and impressed his economics professor with his math skills. His career focused on numbers, from his early days of teaching at University of Kentucky, through his work at EPA on the negative impacts of leaded gasoline and of ozone depletion on melanoma incident rates, to his proud moments as a climate scientist, including being recognized for his contributions to the IPCC's Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

To family and friends he was known as an unrepentant punster, an avid puzzler, a cycling commuter, a Palisades swim team parent, an awesome bread baker, a gardener, a volleyball player, a DIYer, a thumb-war master, and a mobile-making woodworker with a perpetually messy workshop.

Hugh is survived by his longtime partner Carol Corrado, their two daughters Catherine Pitcher and Natalie Pitcher Clark, and granddaughter Insley; his older daughters from his first marriage to Judith Mitchell (d. 1999), Elizabeth Pitcher and Susan Pitcher; and his younger siblings Charley Pitcher, Cathy McGregor, and Pablo Pitcher DeProto.

Memorial Service October 1, 10:30 a.m., Collington Interfaith Chapel, Mitchellville, MD.
