MARGARET BURROUGH Obituary

Margaret Mary Wohlgemuth  Burroughs
Margaret "Peg" Mary Wohlgemuth Burroughs of Annapolis passed away on July 31, 2019. Peg was born on February 15,1928, in Annapolis, to the late George Fringer and Veronica Fitzgerald Wohlgemuth. She was raised in Washington, DC and New York City. Peg attended St. Anne's Elementary School and Immaculata Preparatory School in Washington and graduated from Notre Dame College in Baltimore. She was a first grade teacher in Baltimore, then worked for Army Special Services in Europe and Washington, and for Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), as director of college recruitment. In 1971, Peg married the late Henry "Hank" Dashiel Burroughs, Jr., an award winning Associated Press photographer. They retired to their home in West River, Maryland. Avid sailors, Peg and Hank enjoyed countless cruises on their 30 foot Cheoy Lee, the Carina. In 2007, Peg published "Close-Ups in History", a biography and pictorial collection of her husband's career as an AP and White House photographer from post-war Germany through the presidency of Gerald Ford. Peg was a tireless volunteer, serving as a board member of the Baywoods Residents Association, chairman of the Baywoods Activities and Arts Committee, a board member at Historic London town, president of the Chesapeake Environmental Protection Association, president of the Maryland Chapter of Save our Streams, and a member of numerous other environmental and historic groups in Anne Arundel County. Peg is survived by two brothers and their wives, George and Honora Wohlgemuth of Annapolis and Bill and Pat Wohlgemuth of West Chester, Pennsylvania, and 13 nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she is predeceased by a brother and his wife, Tom and Anne Wohlgemuth. A funeral mass will be held at St. John Neumann Church, 620 Bestgate Road, Annapolis on Thursday, August 8 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Henry D. I had the pleasure of knowing this incredible woman since 1967. I was her Maid of Honor at her wedding. It was truly "My Honor" to have known her and her beloved family. They brought joy to everyone who knew them. She will always be my cherished friend and remembered each Sunday at Mass. Terri Robinson

I only knew Peggy for a few years. I started attending the 10:30 mass at St. Marys after going to an earlier mass for years. We always sat in the same row and for some reason she took a liking to me. I was very sorry when she stopped going to St. Marys. I did see her for a last time the week before she passed at the Ramshead Roadhouse where she had lunch. I'm glad I'll be able to go to her funeral mass.
