I am Aunt Evie's oldest niece, the daughter of her sister, Florence. I remember the first time we visited her in VA, and she took my brother and me to a Marine Band Concert. She wore her uniform and as we walked in all the young Marines saluted her. We felt that we were with a real celebrity! When our family got together at our grandparents' for Christmas, Aunt Evie was the "biggest kid" there. Christmas was never as much fun when she wasn't able to be home with us. When we took my sons out to visit her, we were to meet her at the Washington Monument following a full day of site seeing. Since it looked like it was going to storm, the boys and I got in line and went ahead up in the monument. When she arrived, she was disappointed that we had already gone up, because she said that was one thing she had never done in all the years she had lived in the area, and she was planning on doing it with us. I don't know if she ever did or not! We didn't see her often, but I will miss her phone calls and Christmas letters.

My condolences to Evie's family. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to meet her and work with her briefly at the Smithsonian.

Evie's love for world travel...Antarctica with the Penguins!

I came to know Evie, my Aunt-in-law shortly after I married her nephew Ron back in 1979. I liked her instantly! She had an eccentric but endearing personality. I admired her military background as a female leader during times that saw very little of that! I often found myself bragging to friends or coworkers that “my husband’s aunt was a Colonel in the Marines, and first female to have charge of male troops!” No wonder she developed such a strong nature! Her unique position at the Smithsonian was always providing entertaining stories that she would share with us via her annual Christmas letter. She was never bashful about sharing her political views and whether you agreed with her or not, you couldn’t deny she felt strongly and stood up for what she believed. I will always remember her as a person who pursued her interests such as reading, opera, and travel with absolute dedication and passion. I’ve included my favorite photo that still amazes me each time I look at it. It’s Aunt Evie on one of her many world travels – in Antarctica, and look closely…yes, she is standing amongst the penguins!

I worked with Evie as a fellow Smithsonian volunteer for many years and kept in touch with her after I left the area. When I last spoke to her in the fall, she regretted having to retire from her volunteer duties. I feel sure the SI is not the same without her. My condolences to her family.

I had worked with Evie for several years when she volunteered at the Smithsonian's VIARC answering public inquires; she would call me at NMAH for questions related to our objects. It was always a pleasure and we frequently had a laugh about some of the more unusual questions she would get. I am very sorry to hear of her passing. - Nan Card, Assistant Registrar for Acquisitions, SI, NMAH.

Very sad news. I worked with her for a few years at the Smithsonian. She was a force to be reckoned with. She will be missed.
