NANCY P. McCARTHY

McCARTHY NANCY P. McCARTHY (Age 90) Passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 9, 2012 in the home of her son in Alexandria, VA, after a brief illness. Nancy and her late husband of 62 years, retired Army Brigadier General Joseph E. McCarthy, had moved to Ft. Belvoir, VA in 2009 from Carlisle, PA where they had lived 34 years. BG McCarthy passed away in April, 2010. Born October 23, 1922 in Chicago, IL, to Bonnie and William Pattison, Nancy attended Stephens College, Columbia, MO, and graduated from Colby College, Waterville, ME. She joined the American Red Cross in 1944 and was sent to Sapporo, Japan where she met then-LT McCarthy. They were married in Sapporo in 1947, and Nancy became a devoted Army wife, world traveler, elegant entertainer, and loving mother. She loved art, opera, travel, and antiques, and collected Chinese snuff bottles. She was an award-winning realtor for 20 years in the Carlisle-Harrisburg, PA area, and later helped her husband garner support to establish the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle. Most of all, Nancy loved her family. Nancy is survived by sisters Priscilla and Harriet Pattison; daughters Nancy Piotter (Al), and Christina Delaney (Tom); son Joseph McCarthy (Margi); grandchildren Joe and Chris Leger, Nicholas and Daniel Delaney, Lisa King (Tommy); Chelsea, August and Montgomery McCarthy; Natalie Ronollo; great-grandchildren Sam and Sequoia Leger; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends and family are invited to Visitation at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Rd, Springfield VA 22151 on Monday, December 17 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. On Friday, December 28 at 10 a.m. a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Chapel, West Point, NY, and she will be interred at the West Point Cemetery with her beloved Joe. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions that are tax deductible to the Army Heritage Center Foundation, "Build on Success" campaign, P.O. Box 839, Carlisle, PA 17013.
