PAUL GODWIN Obituary

GODWIN Dr. PAUL HERBERT BARLOW GODWIN Passed into peace October 30, 2017 after a hard battle with cancer at Enloe Hospital in Chico, CA. Born to Herb and Erna Godwin in London, England, March 14, 1935, Paul immigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1952 with character shaping memories of the air Battle of Britain. He enlisted in the US Marine Corp and served as an infantryman in Korea, where his stature made him a natural to carry a B.A.R. in combat. Discharged as a Corporal, he matriculated to Dartmouth College on the G.I. Bill where he thrived both academically and as a member of the Dartmouth Crew. With his BA in International Studies, he moved to the University of Minnesota for a MA in Asian studies followed by a PHD in Political Science. An internationally recognized China specialist, he first honed his analytic skills in the CIA. However, with Dorothy, the love of his life, he soon found his way to his true calling as an educator of America's future leaders, first as a professor at the USAF War College, Montgomery, Alabama, and later as a professor at the National War College, Ft. McNair, Washington, D.C. from which he retired to Chico in 1998. A popular lecturer and prolific author, he delivered his research findings concerning all aspects of Chinese defense and security affairs at more than 50 conferences at home and abroad, as well as publishing a similarly large number of publications. Affectionately remembered by many of his colleagues as "Tall Paul" or in China, the "Tall Scholar," he was always a gentleman, well known for being willing to offer a helping hand to younger scholars and researchers. In the PLA he is remembered as one of only two US NWC faculty members ever invited to be in-resident scholars at their prestigious National Defense University in Beijing. He was equally welcome in Taiwan where he was annually invited to provide his expertise. He had a great interest in Photography and Art. He documented his travels around the world with a 35mm camera making volumes of slides to be viewed on large screen by family and friends. He also had a love of automobiles, from vintage to modern. He had many tales of driving in Minnesota's snow, throughout the rugged west and into South America in what are now classic cars. A Marine, Scholar, Devoted Friend, Husband and Father - he will be missed. He is survived by his daughter Victoria (Don) Boger, and his son Christopher (Angela) Godwin. Services have not yet been planned. Paul and his late wife Dorothy's ashes will be scattered together at a date and place to be determined. He is survived by his daughter Victoria (Don) Boger, and his son Christopher (Angela) Godwin. Paul was born about three weeks before me in 1935. We were together in the Ph.D program at the University of Minnesota, he in Political Science and I in European history. We were part of a small group of graduate student friends who were interested in shooting and hunting. A few years later we met again as CIA analysts. We also had similar military interests, he as a marine infantryman, and I as an infantry paratrooper in the army. He stood out because of his height and the remnants of his English accent. He had a delightful personality as a young man, and was a good friend to those of us with similar interests at the U. of M.

Paul and I were together at CIA, and we were office mates at the National War College for 12 years. He was a wonderful colleague and friend, and always willing to share his deep understanding of Chinese policy with faculty and students. Paul was no ideologue; he was a serious scholar. He did his best to make sure that the war college was an educational institution and not a training institution that the professional military often wanted it to be. He will be missed. Mel Goodman
