ROBERT SWART Obituary

ROBERT HENRY SWART
Died in his sleep on October 22, 2014. Beloved husband of Johanna, loving father of Jeremy (Erin), and brother of Marilyn English (John), Edward (Carol), Ginny Purcell (Greg), Carol Ten Eyck (Jim Idema), and John (JoAnn), and uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. Born in Grand Rapids, MI, he earned his undergraduate degree in classics from University of Michigan and graduated from University of Michigan Law School with a J.D. He and Johanna moved to Washington, DC in 1969, where he started his legal career at Kirkland and Ellis. In 1973, he joined Mayer, Brown, and became a partner there. He was an expert in tax and ERISA law. He served on the board of Catholic Charities. After retirement in 2003 he volunteered at SOME and was on the board of COHHO, both organizations that help the homeless. He enjoyed world travel and was a fan of the Nationals, the U of M Wolverines, and the Redskins. He had a reputation for being generous to those in need. He succumbed to lymphoma after a valiant battle. A funeral service will be held at All Souls Episcopal Church, 2300 Cathedral Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20008, on Monday, November 3, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to SOME, Inc., 71 O St., NW, Washington, DC 20001.
