Sherry was a wonderful friend to me for many years. I enjoyed her company always, her sweet smile, her great listening ability, great sense of humor, her compassion for the less fortunate, her interest in making the world a better place, and so much more. I always was happy to hear about her talented and lovely family whom she adored. So sorry for your loss, Reuben, Isaac, Sarah, and Jesse and everyone else who loved her. There are so many of you missing Sherry, because she was a wonderful person.

Dear Reuben, Jesse, Isaac, Sarah, and all our other cousins,
Living in Israel means being physically further apart. I've tried to participate in a goodly number of family events but I know we've missed some and this will be one of them.
There was one time, two decades ago, when we were physically close. My daughter Ita reminded me today of this story. In the 1992-93 school year we took a sabbatical in Highland Park New Jersey. Reuben and Sherry were living in Westfield a short drive away.
Our youngest son, Avi, was born that year on Sukkot and come Chanukah we were invited by Reuben and Sherry for dinner one evening. Of course we went with infant and other children.
That evening, amidst a repertoire of holiday songs, Sherry, with her very sweet voice, began singing a song we had never heard before:
"I am a latke, a Chanukah latke, and I am waiting for Chanukah to come."
As the evening progressed a new set of lyrics was born:
"I am an Avi, a beautiful Avi, and I am waiting for Chanukah to come."
I guess that as a commander in the IDF he has outgrown these words but they still remind me of Sherry's sweet singing.
Finally let me note that today is Purim - and this brings up the perpetual debate, which is more important the hamentasch or the latke? It doesn't matter. This Purim I offer up this latke in Sherry's memory.
May her soul be bound up in the scroll of life. May the family be comforted amongst the mourners of Zion.
