Mildred Barnard Obituary

Mildred "Millie" Janet Barnard, 89, of Waverly, died on Saturday, April 14, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, of natural causes.
Millie was born on Aug. 16, 1922, in Lacona, the daughter of Paul and Hazel (Gray) Bowles. She graduated from Milo High School in 1939 and Simpson College in 1941 with a degree in elementary education. While in college she was member of the Alpha Chi sorority. Following her schooling, she taught elementary school in Milo, and Maquoketa.
She married Jerry Barnard in May of 1942. Millie and Jerry and their children, Jane and Art lived in Dubuque, until they moved to Waverly in 1959. She later became owner and operator of the Spinning Wheel Yarn Shop in Waverly from 1973 to 1984. She started a knitting group in her shop in 1973, which is still active today, and she still enjoyed knitting.
Millie was a member of Peace United Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Jane (Francis) Wollenzien of Waverly; one son, Arthur (Dawn) Barnard of Reno, Nev.; two grandchildren; and five great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Bowles in 1954; her mother, Hazel Bowles in 1991; her husband, Jerry in 1983; a brother, James Bowles; and a sister, Virginia Mae (Bowles) Spicer.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 18, at 11 a.m. at Peace United Church of Christ in Waverly with Pastor Jon Hennings officiating. Burial will be held in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Waverly. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
Memorials may be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran School in Waverly. Online condolences may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.
