Anne Kennedy Obituary

Kennedy, Anne Greenland

February 10, 1956 - March 4, 2024

Anne Greenland Kennedy went to her heavenly home on March 4, 2024. She lived an abundant and wonderful life, full of devoted family, friends and faith.

Anne was born February 10, 1956 to William and Virginia Greenland in Salisbury, NC. She graduated from North Rowan High School and continued to maintain close friendships with many of her childhood and teenage friends. She earned BS in Science Teaching and a Master of Arts in Teaching degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill and loved being a Tar Heel. At UNC, she enjoyed being in the flag corps and pep band. Her teaching career began in Roxboro, NC at Person Senior High, where she coached the flag corps and majorettes, and was a faithful member of Roxboro Baptist Church. Anne and Connor married in 1981 and moved to Winston-Salem, where Anne taught at Walkertown Junior High, Carver High, North Forsyth High, Walkertown Elementary, back to North Forsyth, then at Reagan High from its inception. After her family, teaching was her passion, and nothing brought her joy more than to hear from former students and learn that they had pursued a science or medical career. Two highlights of her life were being elected Teacher of the Year at Reagan in 2014 and being inducted into the Reagan Hall of Fame in 2023.

Another blessing in her life was being a full-time mom for nine years and spending lots of time with sons Jim and Chris. Anne volunteered and substituted at her sons' school, Kimberley Park Elementary, served as volunteer coordinator, and honored as Volunteer of the Year. She also earned a third degree black belt in karate.

Anne was a loyal member of several local churches where she maintained lifelong friendships: Maple Springs United Methodist, Lewisville United Methodist, Sunrise United Methodist (where she was Drama director) and Old Town Baptist. She taught Sunday school at each church. Since 2007, she has been a faithful member of College Park Baptist Church, where she taught the Ruth Sunday School Class and played handbells for many years. For several years before and after her mother's passing, she taught Sunday School for her mom at First United Church of Christ in Salisbury.

Anne leaves behind her devoted husband, Connor and sons Jim and Chris, who all took amazing care of her after she faced health challenges following her retirement. In addition, she is survived by her brother John Greenland (Kim) and niece Carrie of Salisbury, her brother-in-law, Ralph Kennedy of Chicago, IL, and father-in-law Jim Kennedy and sister-in-law Ruth Kennedy of Winston-Salem. Her multitude of friends were also amazing in supplying her with meals, cards, phone calls and most importantly, love and prayers. She and her family are eternally grateful to all those who stuck with her to the end, as well as dedicated doctors, especially Dr. David Priest.

Anne wants all her family and friends to know how much she loved them and that each one was a special light in her life. Always let your loved ones know how you feel before it's too late.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m. on March 17, 2024 at College Park Baptist Church with Rev. Ramon Smith officiating. Memorials may be made to College Park Baptist Church, 1701 Polo Rd. Winston-Salem, NC 27106 or First United Church of Christ, 207 West Horah St. Salisbury, NC 28144. Mrs. Kennedy was the best biology teacher anyone could ask for! She was always so patient and kind, and never had a mean word to say about anyone. For those of us who struggled in science, she was an invaluable support. She was also our beloved science academic team coach, and everyone adored her. I am so honored to have known and have been taught by her.

Mrs. Kennedy was the absolute best biology teacher anyone could ask for. She was always patient and kind, and never had a mean word to say about anyone. I struggled in science, and she was always an incredible support. She was also our beloved science team academic coach, and everyone adored her. Reagan will never be the same without her, as she touched so many lives. I am so grateful to have known and to be taught by her.

Anne was a light, indeed. Her beautiful smile, her unending warmth and compassion, and her zest for living will not be forgotten. It was an honor to have known her.

I met Anne while kayaking with the YRK group. We started meeting up to kayak together and we enjoyed many sunny days in the outdoors. She was delightful to be with and was so thoughtful of others. I was hoping we could be back on the water again this summer. I will miss her warm companionship.

I remember Anne from our days at Chadwick Pool. She was always so kind and cheerful. I know she will be greatly missed by her family and friends. I am so sorry.
