Grace Jane Armstrong Chappel

CHAPPEL Mrs. Grace Jane Armstrong Chappel, 86, passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Rockingham County on May 22, 1921, to the late William Henry and Georgia Stewart Armstrong. Mrs. Chappel was a member of Linville Forest Church of Christ and retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system food service division. Grace and her husband, Curtis, opened their hearts and home to many foster children, from as young as one week old to several years old, whom she looked after until they were adopted or returned to their parents. Several remained in her life to the end. Mrs. Chappel enjoyed bowling at North Side Lanes, shopping trips to New York and camping at Ocean Lakes Campground in Myrtle Beach, S.C. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Chappel was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Eugene Chappel; her daughter, Judy Chappel Clark; and several brothers and sisters. Surviving are her granddaughter, Pamela Clark Schmal, and husband Danny; the light of her life, great-granddaughter Meghan Carol Schmal; sister Flossie Fine; foster daughter Tina W. Matthews and husband Tom; foster son Jimmy Nicholson and wife Vickie; former son-in-law Butch Clark and wife Barbara; special great-nephew Randy Golding; special nieces Lucy Myers and Sherrie Campbell Holder; sisters-in-law Ruby Davis and Wilma Slate and husband Archie; and also special friends Ada and Tom Long. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel, with the Rev. Evelyn M. Lemons officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, March 21, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith United Methodist Church, 1645 Griffin Road, Rural Hall, NC 27045, or Linville Forest Church of Christ, 450 Linville Road, Kernersville, NC 27284.
