Dale Murphy Obituary

YORK Dale Eugene Murphy, 93, entered into eternal rest at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014, at York Hospital. He was the husband of Constance A. (Athans) Murphy, and Gertrude R. (Stump) Murphy, who entered into rest on December 22, 1984. He was born in Brogue, on August 16, 1920 and was the son of the late R. Emory and Mary Margaret (Warner) Murphy. Dale attended Thompson's one room elementary school, was a graduate of Red Lion High School, then went on to Millersville College in Lancaster County. After graduating from college in 1941 he started teaching in Collinsville at the Clearview Elementary One Room School, then went into the Army, serving his country during WWII in France, then Germany, from 1942 to 1946 as a Sargent in the 83rd Infantry Division. In 1946 Dale worked at the Prothonotary Office at the York County Court House and as clerk in the Common Pleas Court. After WWII, when he was discharged from the military, he went back to Japan in 1950 to teach American children of servicemen at the American Dependent School of Occupations Forces. In 1951 he went to the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla., to earn a degree in law, where he passed the Bar as an attorney in Florida. He then returned to Pennsylvania where he began to teach at Hannah Penn Junior High School in York as an English teacher, retiring in 1986 after 40 years of service. He was a lifetime and very active member of the New Harmony Presbyterian Church in Brogue, where he was formerly an Elder Commissioner; a member of the York Masonic Lodge #266, Supreme Forest Tall Cedars of Lebanon York #30; Zembo Temple Shrine of Harrisburg; Brogue Community Lions Club, where he served as president in 1972-1973; and Conservation Society of York. In addition to his wife, Constance, he leaves numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Trout;, and four brothers, Harold, Kenneth, R. Earl, and Donald Murphy. There will be a viewing Tuesday, April 15, from 10 to 11 a.m. at New Harmony Presbyterian Church, 2295 Delta Road, Brogue. Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion, will be assisting the family with the arrangements. A Service of Honor and Praise for Dale will be held at the church on Tuesday to begin at 11 a.m. His pastor, the Rev. Robert S. Edmundson, will officiate. Burial will be in New Harmony Presbyterian Cemetery with full military rites presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be offered to New Harmony Presbyterian Cemetery Association for Perpetual Care, c/o Mr. Thomas Workinger, 12 Forest Hills Road, Red Lion, PA 17356. Dale and Connie were married on October 11, 1987, and would have celebrated 25 wonderful years in October. He loved to travel with Connie and they have been to all seven continents, including Antartica. Dale was also very proud to let people know that at age 90 he was the first one, or the " guinea pig", for a new procedure being tried at York Hospital called Transfemoral Aortic Valve Replacement or TAVR, where a valve in the heart is replaced by going throgh the femoral artery without having to surgically open the chest.

Connie, so sorry to hear of Dale's passing. I only met Dale several times
at the church bazaars, but what an upbeat person he was. May your faith, family and friends now help you through the difficult days - with sincere sympathy - Stella Hatgiannis, Wyomissing, PA

Connie,

My condolenses to you on the passing of Dale. I was so glad to see both of you again back in 2008 when my mother and cousin of Dale passed away. I believe one of Dale's brothers was there as well. "Aways rejoice, unceasingly pray and in everything give thanks". 1 Thes. 5:16-18

God Bless,

My mother Ferne, who passed away in 2008, was especially fond of Dale, as were my wife and I. The Murphy "boys" were favorites of hers. From his obituary, I learned quite a few things about Dale that I didn't know. What a fascinating man! My sympathies to the entire family, and especially to his wife Connie, who was my geography teacher at Hannah Penn Jr High in York PA.

Sorry to hear of Dale's passing. I always enjoyed his company at Red Lion Scottish Rite Club dinners.

Dear Connie, Bob and I have known Dale and all of his wonderful family for many years. As a matter of fact I went to school to him, at Collinsville school for 1st grade. Then he went into the service. Also Bob and I went to New Harmony Church with him until we moved to N.C., thirty years ago.
You have our deepest sympathy, and will be in our prayers now and in the days to come.
Donna Ruff Myers and Bob Myers.
