James Robinson Obituary
YORK On Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at 12:30 p.m. God heard a cry from earth. He heard the cry of James A. ''Pop'' Robinson and brought him home. James was born to Marie Johnson in York, on March 27, 1915, but was reared by his grandparents, Richard and Nicy Smith, and resided on S. Penn St. during his youth. James attended Smallwood School located on Water St. (now Pershing Ave.). He was on the Deacon Board of Shiloh Baptist Church and then a member and a Deacon of Mount Moriah Church in York under the leadership of the late Rev. Nathaniel Johnson. While living in York, James started a salvage business until he joined the C.C. Camp in Mt. Union. James married his first wife, the late Irene Robinson, in Towson, Md. They had one son, Daniel Robinson, who entered into rest at the age of 13. Later in life, James worked for C.C. Fisher collecting garbage for York City. He then worked for the Caterpillar Company of York and retired in 1983 after working there for more than 25 years. James married his second wife, Adeline Cherry, in 1986. They lived at 628 S. Pershing Ave. for years. James was a strong advocate for the foster children of York City. James and Adeline didn't have any biological children, but he had lots of stepchildren. James adopted three children, Debra and Michael Bell and Lorenzo Chavis. James' wife, Adeline Robinson, was called home in 1999. In 2000, James moved to Rosedale, Md., to reside with his stepdaughter, Agnes Hebron, and her husband, Hilbert. In addition, James leaves to cherish his memory three stepsons, Maurice King and wife, Shirley of Frederick, Md., James King of York, and Oscar Cherry of York; four stepdaughters, Betty Smith, Martha Brown, Mary Felder, and Vergie Conaway, all of York; one daughter-in-law, Sharon King of York; and a host of family and friends. James was preceded in death by a son, John King; a grandson, Andre King; and a brotherin-law, Leroy Ison. There will be a viewing from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Boulding Mortuary, Inc., 471 Madison Ave., York. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Deacon Samuel B. Thompson, Jr. officiating.
