JACKSON SPRINGS, N.C. — John William Andrews Jr. died Thursday, June 11, 2015.
Born in Greensboro in 1920, he was the son of John William Andrews and Louise Boren Andrews. He attended Greensboro public schools and the Westtown School in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He then graduated from N.C. State with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. He served as an ensign in the U.S. Navy in WWII. In 1942 he married Sallie Pitt Cobb of Pinetops, North Carolina.
In 1946 he began working for Carolina Steel Corp., where he was a vice president and a member of the board of directors. He retired in 1975. He was active in the Greensboro community. He was president of the Greensboro Rotary Club, campaign chairman for the United Way, active with the Red Shield Boys Club and the Society of the Advancement of Management, among others. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Throughout his life, Bill was an avid outdoorsman. As a youthful Sea Scout, he began a lifelong love of sailing. He was a member of the Little Washington Yacht and Country Club. He sailed the Chesapeake Bay for many summers out of the Fishing Bay, Virginia Yacht Club and was a member of the Southport Yacht Club.
He also had a keen enthusiasm for hunting, horses and field trials. For some years he had a shooting preserve at his farm at Jackson Springs, near Pinehurst. He participated for decades in local, state and national field trials, at times showing a prize dog and at times judging the trials. He was a founder and president of the N.C. Field Trial Association and president of the Pinehurst Field Trial and the Central Carolina Field Trial. He was a supporter of the N.C. Wildlife Association, Ducks Unlimited, Quail Unlimited and the N.C. Wildlife Habitat Foundation.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Andrews. He is also survived by his children, John William Andrews III and wife Jo Ann, Carol Andrews Franklin and husband Jud and Sallie Boren Andrews. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Susannah Franklin Winstead and husband Mark, John William Andrews IV and wife Leah, Jason Wade Andrews; and great-grandchild, Andrew Spencer Winstead.
He is also survived by his stepchildren, Debra Daniels and husband Timothy, Robert Venters and wife Judy and Joel Venters and wife Zip; stepgrandchildren, Jennifer Cottingham, Katy Cottingham, Joel Venters II, Megan Stewart, Grayson Venters; and great-grandchildren, Buck Venters and Eliot Stewart.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Jones Springs Methodist Church, 1500 Jones Springs Church Road, Ellerbe.
