To all the family and friends of Andy.
Andy has been alive in my classroom for the last 30 years. Andy always had a great sense of humor! I have a giant rubber spider on my wall that Andy was using one day to scare everybody in 6th grade(including me lol). For the last 30 years, I've kept that spider and have used it on the first day of school to talk to my classes about the funny, kind, self sacrificing boy/man Andy is. Although it starts out humorous, a quiet always comes over the class as the story unfolds of Andy's sacrifice. I've had student's cry, stand and cheer, applaud, etc every time for Andy. All year I keep that spider in the front of class and refer to it almost daily.
I'm retiring from teaching next year, but my daughter who knows the story, will be starting her first year teaching.
She only wants one thing from my classroom.
I think I hear that goofy laugh of Andy's.

To the family of Sgt. Andy A. Stevens:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.
Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.
Respectfully,

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Stevens Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

To the family of Andy Stevens:
My name is Stephanie Zeisler and in honor of Memorial Day, our school has chosen a fallen soldier from Wisconsin to write an elegy about. I am honored to have chosen Andy Stevens. His story grabbed my interest and when I saw his picture, I was intrigued by his big blue eyes. How could you say no? To be honest, he reminds me of my brother, Andrew. He's a senior in high school and with only two weeks left of school, I'm scared to admit that he's joining the Marines. He's my hero and my role model and I'm scared to see him go.. I just wanted to give you my love and let you know that your soldier will be remembered for all the years left to come. My deepest condolences to you and your family. Fighting the grief and sadness is hard. Trust me, I know. My dear friend Matthew Cody died last year on November 21st and it's still hard to fight back the tears when I think of him. But no matter the obstacles that will come, and the pain that will surface, please stay strong and know that he is being thought of every day. I pray for peace and health for your family. Andy Stevens will never be forgotten.

Tomah has lost another soldier recently and it brought back all the memories of losing you. It seems that a lot of things trigger thoughts of you pretty often, especially around this time of year. I hate reading the church bulletin at the Christmas Eve service and seeing your name in the memorials, as I am sure most of the other people at the service do. Merry Christmas Andy! I wish you were still here to share it with your family and friends!

Hi Andy,
We had our 15 year highschool reunion this past Saturday. There was no getting over your absence. We were all missing you and talking about the last time we had talked to you. We started taking up a collection to buy a memorial brick for you for the new monument they will be building in Tomah next year. And the class of 1995 will also be purchasing a tree and donating it to the highschool in memory of you. You will never be one of the forgotten! You are always in my thoughts!

I had a dream about Andy last night and couldn't figure out why. Then I realized his birthday was last week and I think Andy was saying hi. We went to school together and spent many summers together at the Tomah pool. I had many laughs and fun times growing up with Andy and I think of him often. I don't think his friends or family will ever truly get over the loss of such a great man. I was recently at a get together with some of our classmates and we were having a good time when someone mentioned something that Andy had done in highschool and the room got quiet. It is painful to know we will never hear his laugh or see those sparkling blue eyes. I want his family to know Andy will always be remembered and admired by all who were lucky to have known him. Andy will always and forever be one of the good guys.

In Memory of Andy ~ (Debra Estep)
December 2, 2008
Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Andy, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Well, today is Andy's birthday and he always marveled at the fact that I never forgot to wish him a happy one, so I thought I would share a favorite memory. In highschool Andy and I use to attend a teen night at the Evangelical Free Church. There were different activities and at the end there was a time to share anything you want- a prayer request, a thought, anything. Well, Andy raised his hand and without a word went up to the front of the small group and starting singing "Take this cup" from the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar". Its a very theatrical song and VERY LONG and he sang the entire thing, flailing his arms, the whole bit. I still laugh when I think of this. And everyone was shocked and thought he was very strange (or crazy). But that was one of the many many many moments that made him my hero. He wasn't the least bit embarrassed or fearful. He felt like singing that song and he did. All of it. And that's the way Andy lived his life and that's the way he died. Brave and fearless and everybody's hero.
If Andy's family is reading this, please know my thoughts and prayers are with you often. I loved Andy deeply and he gave me pure unconditional love back and as much as I am devastated by his absence, I know your pain is much greater.
So today I am going to celebrate Andy and remember all the great things about him and maybe even do something crazy and brave to make him proud.

As I am currently deployed...my deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones. I was the Platoon Sergeant of Sgt. Stevens from 2001-2003. The war was going on but we were in Okinawa. Most of the Marines in the photo of the Scout Snipers worked for me and Lt. Patrick McMahon. He was an awesome Marine. I still get the pleasure of receiving phone calls from all those guys and he is sorely missed. God Bless

To the family of Sgt. Andy A. Stevens:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 28 May, 2006. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “What Are We to Remember?” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.
Respectfully,

To Andy's family:
I don't quite know what to say. My brother lost his life alongside Andy, on Dec. 1st in Fallujah. I know there are no words to ease your pain. I struggle on a daily basis. Sometimes it's hard because people look at you like you should be okay......and you just want to yell that you'll never be okay again! The closer we get to the end of 2/7's deployment, the harder it gets. I think that things are starting to sink in, that I realize they are really no longer in Iraq, and that they will not be coming home with the rest of their platoon. My brother was my best friend, my only sibling, and it has been a tremendous loss in my life. I know my brother is looking down on me, wishing he could take away my pain. I am so proud of him, and I am so proud to be his sister!
I have never met Andy, but I know that he will always be a HERO, one that I will tell my future children about. He made the ultimate sacrifice, and in doing so, he enabled us to live in peace and enjoy our freedom. Our Marines accomplished more in their young lives, than many people do in an entire lifetime.
I want you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers daily. I think about you so much.....and I think about Andy, and the other Marines that lost their lives that day. They will forever be in my heart.
Rest In Peace, Sgt. Stevens

To Andy's family and friends-
My family and I are praying for you and your family during this difficult time. We send our deepest empathy as we lost our Marine on 11/30/05 in Fallujah. We are comforted to know that our Marines are serving their country with such honor and bravery. We are so proud of our Marines and all of our other service men and women for all that they have done and continue to do to keep us safe and to give us the freedom we have that so many take for granted.
They are true Heroes and need to always be remembered for their selflessness and sacrifice to better our world. We will forever be united in the loss of our heros. We are so sorry for your loss and hope our words will ease some of the pain, and maybe fill some of your emptiness.

To the Stevens Family,
Like you, we lost our Hero (son SFC Brent Adams) on 12/1 in Ramadi. There are no words - only know you are not alone in your sorrow and grief. I pray an end to this war that has taken all these courageous young men and women and allows the rest of them to come home safely to their awaiting families and loved ones. Know you are in our heart, thoughts and prayers as we move forward, together - not even knowing one another - to find peace and comfort in the memories of our Heros.

Andy and I grew up together, from school to church we had spent many classes and days together. I have literally known Andy and his family since the day I was born. He was always a good friend and I have thought of him often since we graduated high school, wondering how we lost touch so fast. What I remember most is that he was rarely without a joke to brighten someone’s day. He was an honest, comical, loving, and determined person and I will NEVER forget him. I am still in shock that I will never get to talk to or see him again. He will be Greatly missed. To his family – please know that I would’ve been there if I could have for support. He died serving our country and is a true hero. May he rest in peace and may God be with him, his family, and his friends.

Andy was a true patriot. I went to school with Andy and knew his family through church and classes. What I will miss most about him is his spirit. My memories of our childhood are more filled with having fun and messing around than anything else. From sunday school to confirmation, or just seeing him in the hallways of the high school, his funny ways or jokes could brighten anyone's day. We've been gone from high school now for more than 10 years, and I haven't spoken with him since, but no matter what, I think anyone who knew Andy can remember his incredibly unique spirit. I am so proud to say that I knew him once. Andy, your smile will last a lifetime and your sacrifice will never be forgotton. I struggle to find any good in this loss, but I think everyone could agree that through loss others find inspiration. Without question, Andy inspires me. Thank you for your dedication and commitment. You are what makes America special. May god be with you.

I grew up in Tomah and became friends with Amy when we were in the 3rd grade. From day one, the Stevens family welcomed me into their home as one of their own. Andy was the little brother I never had and I treasure the countless memories I have of chasing him around the yard, wrestling as kids do and telling him to SCRAM when Amy and I were busy doing "girl" stuff. I did not know him as an adult, but it became evident to me over the years that he had grown to become a very special person to everyone who knew him. Amy talked so proudly of him each and every time we talked on the phone and shared stories about our siblings. There are not enough hugs I can give or tears I can cry to express my deepest sympathies for the Stevens family during this painful time. My heart aches for all of you. Thank you, Andy.

I grew up with Amy in Tomah and moved away as a young teen. I remember Andy as a high energy little guy who was deeply loved by his family. I was impressed as a young person that Amy seemed to love her little brother so deeply and even included him in our play at a sleepover when my other friends were annoyed by their younger siblings. Several states away now, I heard about Andy's death by accident through an email soliciting prayer for our troops. My thoughts and prayers are with you all, and a special prayer for my long ago friend Amy.
Good Things,

My fondest memory of Andy was when he and my son Chris had a special dress up day at High School. They decided to dress up 70's style. When they came out of my son's bedroom Andy had plaid pants, platform shoes, and a large collared shirt. They asked me if I had any cassettes from the 70's. I put one in and they both tried to imitate John Travolta ala Saturday Night Fever! My son stopped after around 30 seconds but not Andy. He did his thing for the whole song. He really had me in stiches. Several times during the song I told him enough already! He would yell back to keep the song going because he found his groove!
