W. Mays Obituary

W. Owen Mays, 88, of 1001 S. 22nd, died at 10:15 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 6, 2009) in Blessing Hospital. He was born Nov. 7, 1920, in Quincy, a son of Leonidas D. "Lee" and Edna Powell Mays. On March 10, 1950, he married Ann Church in Quincy. She died April 18, 2005. Owen was a 1938 graduate of Quincy High School. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1942 and from the University of Michigan Law School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943-1946. Owen practiced law with the firm of Mays, Walden & Anastas. He was past president of the Adams County Bar Association. In 1999 Owen received the Liberty Bell Award from that association. He was a 50-year member of Lambert Masonic Lodge #659 and a member of Quincy Consistory, and Quincy Hi-12 Club. He was honored by the craft with an MSA award and received his 33rd Degree in Boston in 1983. Survivors include a daughter, Beth A. Deters and her husband, Rich, of Quincy; a son, William O. Mays, Jr. and his wife, Sharon, of Quincy; five grandchildren, Andrew Mays and his wife, Laura, of Quincy, Katie Mays of Chicago, Jenny Mays of Milwaukee, Wis., Dan Mays and Kelsey Deters, both of Quincy; and a step-grandson, Corey Deters of Springfield. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lee Mays; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Jane Mays. SERVICES: 1 p.m. Monday in Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Selves conducting. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery with full military rites conducted by American Legion Post 37. VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Lamber Lodge #659 A.F. & A.M. will conduct Masonic Services at 7 p.m. MEMORIALS: Sunset Home or The Blessing Foundation WEB SITE: www.hansenspear.com ARRANGEMENTS: Hansen-Spear Funeral Directors.
