Michael Phillips Obituary
FORMERLY OF ITHACA - Michael Smith Phillips, 37, of Chesapeake, VA, died in the line of duty August 7, 2008.
Detective Phillips was born on June 17, 1971 in Ithaca, NY. He was raised in Lansing, NY. He was a 1990 graduate of Lansing High School, where he met the love of his life. He then went on to serve our country in the US Air Force for 4 years.
Detective Phillips joined the Hampton Police Department in 1999 and then joined the Virginia Beach Police Department in October 2002. He served faithfully for 9 years until his untimely death.
Detective Phillips was a generous person that always gave of himself. He was a volunteer firefighter and was forever there to help a friend in need. Most importantly Detective Phillips was a devoted father. His sons were the light of his life. He also volunteered as a baseball coach.
Detective Phillips leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 17 years, Terri Lyn Phillips, and their sons, Bailey and Bristol Phillips; his parents, Thomas and Beverly Phillips of Henderson, NC; sister, Terri Zobel and her husband, Richard of Rolesville, NC; father and mother-in-law, Byron and Maxine Van Zile of Matthews, VA; nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. Monday, August 11, 2008, at Rock Church in Virginia Beach.
A celebration of Detective Phillips' life will be held Tuesday, August 12, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Rock Church. Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #8, 961 S. Birdneck Rd., Virginia Beach, VA.

I was on vacation out west when I heard the news via e-mail. My heart ached for you and the kids however I knew you guys would be taken care of by our extended Police Family. I am so very sorry for the loss of your husband Michael. I hope all of the wonderful memories you have will help you through this very sad time in your life. I am orginally from Virginia Beach, and I have a sister on thr Porthsmouth Police Department. My sister stood in the Honor Guard for your husbands service, also I noticed that your husband and I share the same birthday, I will always remember all of you each year on June 17th and I will say a prayer for you. While on vacation with my family in Virginia Beach, I was horrified and saddened to hear of your loss. As I am a police officer in Canada, I visited Precinct 2 to express my condolences and spoke to an officer there. He described Michael as being one happy young man. I did not know Mike personally, however I knew who he was through my friends at the Hampton Police Division. I worked there in the 911 communications center and as a dispatcher, you get to know your officers. I wished I could of met Mike, because I've heard so many great things about him as a police officer and as a friend. Mike will be missed by so many. Tom & Bev and family- I am so sorry to hear about your loss of Michael. Although we are family and I lived in Va. for 32 yrs. I never knew your son. Our son,Keith Loson, retired from the Ithaca Police depart. after 20 yrs. Our paths probably have crossed a dozen times. It is so difficult to have to suffer the death of a child. We often ask WHY and I'm sure Michael's family is asking that now. God is good and we live with His plans and His timing. To the Phillips family, I only met Mike a couple of times at the Courthouse in Virginia Beach, but he was one of the most enjoyable people that I ever had the privilege of meeting. Terri and family, It was with great sadness that I read of the passing of Michael. Though I did not know him personally, it is painfully obivous that we have lost a great guy and police officer. The notes left here can attest to the impact he had on other peoples lives. I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Being a police officer is one of the hardest jobs that one can do. It takes dedication, persistance, and a strong desire. My dad worked with Detective Phillips on the Hampton Police Department. Michael even helped my dad fix the AC at our house. From what I've heard, he was a very generous man who was always quick to help others.
And though it's very hard right now, just remember that Mike is a HERO. He stood for what he believed in and was making a difference for his community.

Det. Phillips helped my family and I so much when I took over managing the family trust's trailer park. He, Officer Molinar, and Officer Cope helped rid Trailer City of major drug infestation, prostitution, and other criminal activity. They helped make the park a much more peaceful place for many thankful tenants. We will always be grateful for their tremendous help. My sympathy to all the Phillips family. I'm a retired captain from the department. I formed the narcotic squad and special investigative unit in 1963. I have a special place in my heart for the unit. It takes a special person to become a member of the Virginia Beach Police Department and a very special person to be in the special unit. May God bless all of you.
