Linda Service Obituary

Linda Holmberg Service

1941 - 2025

- Linda Holmberg Service, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home on September 20, 2025, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 84 years old.

Born on February 20, 1941 in Salt Lake City, Linda lived a life defined by service, resilience, and unwavering devotion to her family. In her final weeks, she shared with her daughter-in-law, "I just wanted my family to know they were loved." That simple statement reflected not only her final wish, but also the way she lived every day of her life. Linda was selfless and giving, especially of her time. Even in retirement, she was rarely at home, always on the move to support those she loved. She could be found in bleachers and stands across the state and beyond, cheering at volleyball games, track meets, soccer matches, basketball games, tennis matches, baseball games, Taekwondo tournaments, and football games. Her steadfast presence and encouragement were her gift to her children, grandchildren, and all who were lucky enough to know her.

Mom loved spending time in the outdoors, especially here in the Wasatch, where she was always moved by the beauty of this state. Her most-loved trail, Catherine's Pass, winds through her favorites: Indian paintbrush, lupine, and columbine and continues to a stunning field of balsamroot under Lake Mary; and four years ago, at the ripe old age of 80, her family joined her in hiking the Wasatch Crest Trail, a goal she'd made for herself decades earlier.

She also cherished the company of her lifelong friends, many of whom, like the Jane Pops (sorry, Mom), she had known since her days at Granite High (Class of 1959). Their laughter, adventures, and shared memories were a joyful constant in her life.

Linda is survived by her adoring husband, Gary Service, to whom she was sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan Temple; her children John (Alison) Service, Chris Service, and Mindy (Justin) Thompson; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and her sister, Pat Stevenson. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.

Linda had a way of making everyone feel welcome and loved, qualities that leave a lasting legacy in her family and her community. We all hope to honor her by being just a little bit better every day. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your local PBS station. Mom loved her Masterpiece Theatre!

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 26, 2025, 11:00 a.m., with a viewing prior from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 p.m., at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel located at 6770 South 500 East, Midvale, Utah.

A separate viewing will be held the evening before on Thursday, September 25, 2025 from 6:00-8:00p.m. at the same address.

I'm so sorry to hear of Linda's passing. We worked together at the state legislature. After several years of knowing each other, we realized we were 3rd cousins. She was full of energy and enthusiasm. My heartfelt condolences to Gary and their family.

I´ve enjoyed serving at the Capitol with Linda and Gary for the past several years. She was always so kind, encouraging, and energetic. I remember putting 2 and 2 together and figuring out they were married to each other and it all made sense. Thank you to Gary and their children for sharing Linda with us in the legislature.
