Waylon Jennings Obituary

Published by Legacy.com on Feb. 14, 2002.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Despite the black cowboy hat and bad-guy image, country star Waylon Jennings was known as a stand-up guy. But when it came to his songs, it was a different story.

“You start messin' with my music, and I get mean,” he told The Associated Press in 1992. “As long as you are honest and upfront with me, I will be the same with you. But I still do things my way.”

Jennings died peacefully Wednesday at his Arizona home after a long battle with diabetes-related health problems, said spokeswoman Schatzie Hageman. He was 64.

“Waylon Jennings was an American archetype, the bad guy with a big heart,” said Kris Kristofferson, who sang with Jennings in the Highwaymen along with Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.

Jennings' list of hits spans four decades and includes country music standards like “Good-Hearted Woman” and “Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” both duets with Nelson.

He made 60 albums and had 16 country singles that reached No. 1. His “Greatest Hits” album in 1979 sold 4 million – a rare accomplishment in country music for that era.

Jennings won two Grammy awards and four Country Music Association awards. Other hits include “I'm a Ramblin' Man,” “Amanda,” “Lucille,” “I've Always Been Crazy” and “Rose in Paradise.”

Singer George Jones called it a “great loss for country music.”

Jennings' deep, sonorous voice was unmistakable. He narrated the popular TV show “The Dukes of Hazzard” and sang its theme song, which was a million seller.

Jennings “had a voice and a way with a song like no one else,” said country star Emmylou Harris, adding “He was also a class act as an artist and a man.”

Jennings had been plagued with health problems in recent years that made it difficult for him to walk. In December, his left foot was amputated.

He traditionally wore a black cowboy hat and ebony attire that accented his black beard and mustache. Often reclusive when not on stage, he played earthy music with a spirited, hard edge.

Some of Jennings' album titles nourished his brash persona: “Lonesome, On'ry and Mean,” “I've Always Been Crazy,” “Nashville Rebel,” “Ladies Love Outlaws” and “Wanted: The Outlaws.”

He often refused to attend music awards shows on the grounds that performers shouldn't compete against each other. He didn't show up at his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame last year.

“Whenever country music got a little too impressed with itself, Waylon was there to let them know what the music's roots were. He was very uncompromising about that,” said Lenny Kaye, a guitarist with the Patti Smith Group who helped Jennings write his 1996 autobiography.

In 1992, Jennings told the AP: “I've never compromised, and people respect that.”

He made occasional forays into TV movies, including “Stagecoach” and “Oklahoma City Dolls,” plus the Sesame Street movie “Follow That Bird” and the B-movie “Nashville Rebel.”

Born in Littlefield, Texas, Jennings became a radio disc jockey at 14 and formed his own band not long afterward. His hit records began in the mid-1960s and his heyday was the mid-1970s.

In 1959, Jennings' career was nearly cut short by tragedy soon after it began.

He was scheduled to fly on the light plane that crashed and killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. Jennings gave up his seat on the plane to Richardson, who was ill and wanted to fly rather than travel by bus with those left behind.

When a plane crash killed seven members of singer Reba McEntire's band in 1991, Jennings was one of the first to call her.

“I told her there's one thing you're going to have to deal with. And that's thinking it was your fault,” he told the AP in 1992. “As a young man at that time, I thought it was my fault. I felt guilty and I couldn't get it out of my mind for years.”

For musician Rodney Crowell, that was typical Jennings.

“For all of Waylon's tough stuff, he had such a tender heart. He was such a sweet soul,” Crowell said.

Waylon Jennings was made perfect in God's image. handsome, talented, charming, the kind of man a woman dreams to have as her true love, I was born to late in life Waylon was 28 years old when I was born. Loved everything about him his eyes, beard, hair, complexion, smile, laugh, and the most soothing voice I still listen to today. To the one and only Waylon Jennings you will always live in our hearts forever.
The way you looked at your wife Jessi is the way every man should look at his wife with so much love, admiration. and respect. Jessi was one blessed lady to be your wife. Thank you for all your music and your children to carry on your name. May God bless them all.

A very kind and understanding man. He tried to help anyone he could. Many times his shoulders were tired, but he included people anyway. When I say I listen to Waylon everyday, you may rest assured that I speak from deep in my heart. Blessings to his family: Terry, Buddy, Shooter, Whey, Johnny, Josh, Waylon's brothers, and other family members. Rest in eternal peace, Waylon.

I see that I must have done something wrong with my previous posting, since my words are not there.
I just wanted to wish you all a very blessed Easter. We will be making the long trip to Texas once again to catch up on things with a lot of the Jennings' clan. It should be a fun time.
And for Liz, thank you so much for your sweet words. Waylon was my beloved second cousin, and he was, indeed, a very gentle man. He is still so painfully missed by all of his family - especially his wife, Jessi (who was the love of his life for 33 years) and his children and his grandchildren. I can tell from everyone's words just how much he is still missed by his fans. All of you have been so kind.
Take care and God bless you all.

I grew up listening to Waylon & Willie. My parents took me to see them in concert when I was very young. I remember having to sit on my Dad's lap because I couldn't see through the bars of the railing. It was such a great show!
We spent our years growing up driving back and forth to Lillooet and other towns in the back of my parents' car or motor home. Listening to Waylon & Willie. I always felt safe in the back with my Dad driving and the music on.
I remember being in hospital for 10 days in Feb. 2002 and seeing on Tv that Waylon had passed away. I couldn't believe it and was really upset. The nurses were so nice. I called my parents and they already knew.
My Dad just passed away on Dec. 2/15. It's been really hard. I've been listening to a lot of Waylon, watching a lot of the concerts. It brings me back to a better time, when my Dad was still here. And when Waylon was still here. I miss them both.
I see that Waylon had to get his left foot amputated. My Dad had to get his left leg amputated above the knee. He wasn't diabetic, but had poor circulation due to a fall sustained on the job.
Dad and Waylon... to me they have always been connected throughout my life. They still are.
My continued condolences and loving thoughts and prayers to Waylon's family and friends. <3

This is in response to Lena from June 8 of this year. Speaking of a movie about Waylon, I really hope one is made. I also think Ben Affleck would be a fine choice. Too bad Robert DeNiro wasn't younger, as I think he would also be great as Waylon.
Waylon is truly deserving of a movie of his life and how he changed the course of country music.

I will never forget watching TV the night in 1995 when Waylon won the "Living Legend" award. At about 55, he was still so darned handsome! He asked an embarrassed Jessi to come onstage with him. He hugged and kissed her. Then he told the audience that without her, he would have had no career. He would have had no life. He said his music, his life, his health, his Spirit, all would have been nothing without Jessi. Then he said that she was the person who deserved the award, and he gave it to her, as she was fighting back tears. Not only was Waylon one fine talented musician, but he sure was one fine man!! He will be FOREVER missed, loved and respected.

Hi Everyone! Just checking in on the fans of my cousin, Waylon. My husband and I recently traveled to Arizona and visited with Jessi. We try to make it out there every couple of years. We all visited Waylon's gravesite and put fresh flowers there. It still does not seem possible that he is really gone.
Jessi had her beautiful little Grandkids with her, and they are so sweet! Sure wish Waylon could have lived to see Shooter's little ones. My family and I just finished watching home movies of the Jennings' clan. Never get tired of Waylon's jokes and antics! You all take care now, and keep your memories coming. It will keep Waylon alive. Then again, I don't think a man like him ever really dies.
Take care!

Connie, I also went online and watched Waylon sing to his "audience of one" - his lovely Jessi. This video is an absolute "must see" for all Waylon fans. One thing is for sure - Jessi Colter was a wonderful wife to Waylon, and stood by him through all of his struggles. But, Waylon was also a wonderful husband, who appreciated, cherished and dearly loved his wife!

Thanks so much to everyone for your kind posts. We all miss Waylon so very, very much!
Speaking of his love for Jessi, there was one song I remember that Waylon wrote and sang for her. I do not think it was ever recorded and sold, but in my opinion it is one of his most beautiful songs. The name of the song is "Where Would I Be Without You". It is a tribute to the woman he loved. Go online and type it in. See Waylon sing the song to Jessi, and you can tell how much it moves him - almost to tears.

August 16, 2015

When I think of Waylon now, I think of him with an arm wrapped around each of his two daughters, who have passed since him. Take care and may God bless you!

Waylon, I miss you so much still. The whole family does. But sites like this help to keep you alive. Thanks to all of you who have contributed your feelings here. Waylon was truly a very special, kind, giving, and good hearted man with more integrity than he knew what to do with. He really was one of a kind. People like that never really die.

For someone who could not read music, Waylon Jennings was the best singer and songwriter of our time. I will always listen to Waylon! He and his lovely wife, Jessi Colter (who sang "I'm Not Lisa") did such beautiful duets together! You could just tell how much in love they were. I had the pleasure of seeing them in concert. When they sang together, Waylon would lovingly caress her face or arm, wink at her and kiss her so lovingly when the song was through. They were married over 30 years. Rest in Peace, dear Waylon.
