Coley Wallace Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 31, 2005.
NEW YORK (AP) - Coley Wallace, who knocked out Rocky Marciano in an amateur bout and played Joe Louis in two movies has died. He was 77.

Wallace died in a Manhattan hospital Sunday of heart failure, his attorney and friend Raymond Sussman said Sunday.

Wallace had a record of 20-7-0 in six years as a professional, but his most memorable moment came as an amateur in 1948, when he defeated Marciano in the New York Golden Gloves tournament. It is believed that the defeat was the only loss ever by Marciano, who went on to win the heavyweight championship and was unbeaten in 49 fights.

"People like Muhammad Ali looked up to him because when they were learning how to box, he was one of the African-American boxers of note," Sussman said.

Wallace is best known for twice portraying Joe Louis on film, once in "The Joe Louis Story" in 1953 and again in Martin Scorsese's "Raging Bull" in 1980.

Wallace also starred in "Carib Gold" in 1957 and played a part in "Rooftops" in 1989.

He is survived by his wife, Pearlie-May, and a daughter Pat.

God Bless, I know this message comes all too late, however we wish to express our deepest sympathy in the passing of Mr. Coley Wallace. My name is Lavonda Smiley Grandy, I'm the daughter of Mr. Levon Smiley, one of Mr. Wallace oldest friend in New York from his boxing years. I myself have heard so many wonderful things about Mr. Wallace and my father's friendship during those times. My father is now 91 years old and still to this day speaks about their friendship with such high regards. My father wanted to let your family know how sad he was about his passing. As well as not being able to extend his condolences in person. He didn't know about his passing until much later and had no way to extend his sympathies at that time. I have some wonderful pictures and stories I would love to share with his wife and daughter/family of some very happy times he had with my father. If you should read this guest book, my father would love to hear from you. Again, God bless your entire family, we hope that you are blessed with as many wonderful memories as we have had with Mr. Wallace. Levon Smiley / Lavonda S. Grandy – my email - [email protected]

I met Mr Wallace when I was an intern in Brooklyn in 1986. I recognized his name from movies when I was a kid...couldn't believe it was he, but there he was. Last week I found the paper he autographed for me very kindly, when he wasn't feeling very well. He was very kind and interested in what I was doing, talked about his family, seemed a very nice and generous man. I am sorry to be so late but I wish his family well and I wish them peace.

December 15, 2010

To the Wallace Family, I am sadden to hear of the passing of Mr. Wallace. I lost contact with he and his wife, who was my children's teacher at P.S. 41 in Brooklyn, N.Y. when we moved. She was Ms. Mulet before marrying Mr. Wallace. We became friends and they would visit me and my kids, Caleen and Anthony at my house. Over the years we thought of and spoke of them so often. Tonight I went on the internet to look them up and to my sadden surprise I found out that Coley had passed over 5 years ago. It's kind of hard to hold back the tears. I'll contact Caleen and Anthony and let them know. I would love to hear from Ms. Mulet (Wallace). Again, I am so sorry for the passing of Mr. Wallace

I bought this movie for 2 dollars, I had no ideal of the inpact that it would have on me. The standards, those who handled him. Has brought me to a point of going back to the old fashion way of life. The movie the ring was also attached. It show me ( the difference between those who are there for you truely) The Joe louis story showed how he had those who really cared to train him properly. The ring was a very good movie. It showed those who just wanted to make a buck. I have watched it now about 50 times. Trying to learn a clear since of obediance. I have learn alot. Thank you. I am sad. Because i wondered what had happen to such a great man. Yet i am glad to have been exposed to his talent... God Bless his work to keep helpping others as it has done for me.

I sparred with coley at the 125th st gym, and fought Marciano in 1949. I was broke, and coley and his family took me in. His father loved boxing and Joe Louis; I was treated like family ( I was white)despite the racism all around. Coley told me that he was offered money to fight Marciano and LOSE. He had to much character to take a fight under those conditions. Rest in peace.

To all, thank you so very much, I am Coley Wallace's Grandson and I stumbled onto this page as I was researching some history on him and I must say I was unbelievably touched by all your words. Thank you so much for all of you and the words you expressed on behalf of him.

If you did not know him, or were never fortunate to have had him cross your paths, let me tell you, he was an amazing man and the epitome of a Gentleman..If I am lucky enough to be half the man he was then I will be blessed. But my family and I were more blessed to have had him for as long as we did and we will never forget his greatness in the ring, but moreso outside of it, because that is where his true legacy will be thought about and how he will be remembered.

I thank you all and I hope that God may bless you and your loved ones as well, and we again thank you for remembering my Grandfather and what truly made him the man he was, while never becoming "Heavyweight Champion" he became a Champion in other ways that can never be duplicated again. Thank You.
