Barney Martin, a former New York City detective who went into show business and became best known for playing Jerry Seinfeld's father Morty on the comedian's hit television series,

December 5, 2018
I ran into Barney in Lexington, KY while he was playing in a Golf tournament to raise money for cancer. I thought I knew him and gave him a big hello and said how nice it was to see him again. I thought I knew him from the horse show I was showing at. He explained to me that I didnt in fact know him from the horse show but rather from Seinfeld. I felt really dumb and apologized for talking to him because I didnt realize that we didnt really know each other. He told me oh no dont worry about it and asked me if I wanted to sit down and talk. We talked for a long time about life. He told me about Mel Brooks giving him his start in show business. He said that he was going to interview for an acting job but that Mel Brooks wanted him to sing and he was not a singer. I asked him what did he sing and he said Danny Boy. I told him thats an Irish song and I thought he was Jewish. He said he was only Jewish on TV. I was so surprised. We spoke about New York and New Jersey and about his Christmas tree farm somewhere in NY. We spoke about 9-11 and I asked what he was doing then. He told me about the loss of his daughter about the same time as 9-11. And thats when he told me the golf tournament was a cancer fundraiser. He asked me about my own life and I told him that I loved photography and was wondering if I should do that for a living rather then my usual sales job. I asked him his advise. He told me to take pictures but to have a backup. By the time over visit was over, he felt like he was my own dad and I hugged him and said goodbye. I felt like I hoped Id see him again soon. Then a few months later I was watching Seinfeld and at the end of the show his passing away date was shown. That episode was dedicated to him. I was so shocked and upset because I had no idea he was even sick. I dont know if I would have said anything more to him, but he was so generous with his time, and his advise and was so caring I just felt devastated. I always wanted to tell his family how wonderful he was to coach me that day and advise me. I do hope that his family sees this so you know that even strangers thought the world of him because he was so caring like a dad. I pray you are all doing well.

To Barney's Family
I met Barney in Red Hook N.Y. through a mutual friend. After that he would always stop and chat whenever we met on the street in Red Hook or Rhinebeck. He was always warm, gracious and full of laughs. I did not know of his passing untill very recently, as I had been seriously ill myself. I will never forget Barney. he was a dear sweet man. May God bless him and grant him peace.

For Barney...Seinfeld would not
have been the same without you.
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Sorry to learn that Barney Martin had passed on.
He must have enjoyed his job on Seinfeld, and yet, being so ruled by his tv wife at the same time.
At least, the reruns, he will still be, and never to be forgotten
Nice that he was able to enjoy the life that the series Seinfeld must have given to him.
May he now rest in peace, and be able to watch the reruns from Heaven above.

My dad and Barney were contemporaries from Queens, NYC, and friends in the NYPD. This friendship continued through the years until my Dad died in 1992. But whenever Barney came on TV I would point him out to my kids. My daughter, now grown up and and living temporarily on the West Coast, was working as a travelling nurse at St. Josephs, and was walking past a room not on her floor when she happened to hear Barney's voice and recognized it from TV. She introduced herself as Gene Ryan's grandaughter, and Barney's face lit up. They spent hours over several nights sitting and talking during her breaks. Barney regaled her with stories about my dad, bringing him to life again for my daughter. It cheered Barnie up, too. He went home a few days later, to spend his final days with his wife. What a great guy.

My husband and I had the honor and pleasure of knowing Barney for many years. He always made us laugh when we saw him. When I think of him, I will always have a smile on my face. He brought such laughter and happiness to everyone that knew him personally as well as to all who knew him through his great thespian work in the entertainment business. I know that he is in heaven entertaining everyone! He was loved very much by everyone and most especially by his wonderful, loving wife Catherine. May God Bless her during this difficult time, but may Barney's memory and love sustain her always.

Now in Heaven new body perfect and whole,
but while you were here your love for all did show.
Barney Martin, a beautiful person from the inside and out.

Angels are rejoicing, but down here hearts are filled with tears,
you gave so much to so many, lots of love laughs and hugs through the years.
Barney Martin, I am going to miss you so very much this is true,
God, has blessed us so much, when he decided to create and send us you.
I Love You And I will Miss You very much,

I was very saddened to hear of Mr. Martin's passing. My dad was in a room next to him twice during his own treatment at St. Joe's and I'd smile and say hello and wish I could give him a big hug. Felt like I knew him and the second floor was no picnic. My dad passed on the 10th of this month. I am sad for us who are left to miss them so much but happy for them for being free from their struggle. My best to the Martin family.

Barney brought so much laughter into thousands of homes every week. He will be dearly missed but not for long. The scripture at John 5:28 says "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out..." We can look forward to seeing him back with us and enjoying his sense of humor once again on the promised paradise earth found at Psalm 37:11 which says: "But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abudance of peace."
