I watched the funeral procession for Officer Crittenden drive down White Bear Avenue from Aldrich Arena last Friday. Another fallen officer. I grieved for him and his family, but I also thought fondly of my old North High classmate, Jerry. I am proud to have known you Jerry. Thanks for protecting us.

Today you would of been 45 years old. Clayton will be playing football for Hamline University this year. (You're 6'7'' baby boy). Im sure your up there with grandpa enjoying watching him work his butt off at practice. Amanda is now in High School. She is working on getting her driving permit. Even though you where taken from them and us at such a young age, youre legacy still lives on. I think of you and Dad everyday. I miss you and love you so much.

Jerry -
Had to chuckle a bit as I read the article today about the SPPD coming up with the idea to use a "wheelchair" as an undercover tool to catch the drug dealers in St. Paul. They made it sound like it was a "new" idea - when we all know in fact you used that technique years ago for them. You were good at what you did! Definitely creative to say the least. It was always a hoot to see you in your get ups - as you headed off to work. Miss you still so much. Love watching Clayton - as we see so many mannerisms, chuckles and grins that remind us so much of you.

Jerry,
Today Mom, Lynn, Ken and I attended the Saint Paul Police memorial service in Saint Paul at Mears Park. Every year I think it will get easier handeling you being gone. I think to myself that none of us are granted a life together on earth for eternity, but you where taken from us to soon. I know your up there in heaven with dad and both of you probably have that grin on your face like your up to something. This year Clayton graduates. I know your so proud of him. We are to. Its events like these that we always say, "God if only Jerry could be here for this. He would be so proud of Clayton." I have to remind myself that you are with us all through your spirit and memories you left with us.
Love you and miss you.

Connie. you do not know me, and I did not know Jerry personally, but I was moved by the loss of one of the 'protectors' of my city. Jerry directly or indirectly protected me and my children from the many threats that we live with in an effort to be 'free americans' who are honest and hard working. I wanted to let you know that I spent the day of jerrys last cruise (funeral procession) taking many pictures and as a graphic designer had assembled it into a nice DVD memorial, complete with music, graphic transitions and text. It was something I did for myself, and not for publicity so no one ever saw it. I was recently confronted by my wife linda who found the DVD while cleaning my home office and she played it and was brought to tears, she said it was an honor for her to see it and that it was very touching and that it should be given to you. I would love to mail it to you if you would just call and ask for it. My name is Tommy, and my # is 763-381-4042. God bless you, and keep you strong in your loss of our hero Jerry..Tommy & Linda Ayde, Roseville, Mn.

I found this site today(03/08/07) and decided to post a story I wrote for my local paper after atending Sgt. Vick's funeral.
ONE OFFICERS THOUGHTS
A funeral is a time of mourning, a time of sorrow. Yet, as I stood at attention, I felt a sense of pride and belonging, something that I have never felt before during such a bleak event.
On Wednesday, May 11, I had the honor of representing the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Department at the funeral services of Sergeant Gerald Vick of the Saint Paul Police department.
Sergeant Vick was shot and killed in the line of duty while working undercover on May 6, 2005.
The only sound was that of the Color guard as they performed the ceremony, but the morning was far from bright and cheery as the name might imply. Dark and gray hung in the sky, as well as in the faces of nearly three thousand of my fellow law enforcement officers.
We stood in several rows that seemed to extend forever taking in the cold breeze without as much a whimper of complaint. As we stood in silence, I could sense that all of us were awestruck by the sheer number of officers that had taken the time to show their respects to Sergeant Vick.
For me, however, the biggest impact was yet to come.
The pallbearers hoisted Sergeant Vick into the air and carried him away from the church. The crowd fell out of formation, and we headed to our patrol cars.
We sat patiently in a queue of thousands watching as each car passed. We waited for what seemed like hours, until it was finally our turn to proudly turn on our lights and join the procession.
I will never forget the sights and sounds of the tour that we took through the streets of Saint Paul. As we slowly moved toward the cemetery, I saw the true magnitude of the number of people who had shown up that day to pay their respects to Sergeant Vick.
People lined the corners and the sidewalks. Droves of people filled the streets. Children and their teachers waited in the schoolyard, pressed up against the fence, yelling, “We love Sergeant Vick.”
Shop owners altered their stores’ signs to read “Thank You, Sergeant Vick” and “We Salute Our Fallen Hero.”
It was crowd after crowd, horde after horde, one gesture after another; and it seemed as if they began to mesh together until they all became one.
The sights of that type of spectacle would have been overwhelming, maybe even scary, if it wasn’t also so touching and beautiful. As we turned a corner, I saw that a large group had covered the pavement with roses.
And a little girl stood at the edge of those flowers, looked at us and said, “Thank you.”
Until that moment, I had never heard anyone thank me for doing my job. I just never thought of my duty as an officer as something that demanded that kind of gratitude.
Everywhere I looked were more signs that read “Thank You” and “We Love You.” And, again, I felt an enormous sense of pride and appreciation for all of my fellow officers.
Then, in the sky, appeared one of the most amazing sights that I have ever seen. On the horizon a rainbow stretched as far as the eyes could see. An eight-mile rainbow, created by over twelve hundred patrol car lights sprawled across a once dark and dirty sky, adding the color that Sergeant Vick deserved.
We converged onto the cemetery grounds as if we were a brigade who had suddenly realized their purpose.
The sound of a single bagpipe filled the cemetery air and a rider less horse waited to greet Sergeant Vick.
As a chorus of bagpipes joined the song “Amazing Grace”, a tear came to my eye as thousands of officers gave one final salute to Sergeant Gerald Vick.
Though our tribute will never live up to the justice that Gerald Vick deserves, I pray that it gives some solace to his wife, Connie, and their two children, Amanda and Clayton. I hope that they know, as they will to continue to remember him forever, so shall his city and all of his fellow officers.
God Bless You, Sergeant Gerald Vick.

I knew Jerry when we worked together at Bar-None Residential Treatment Services for Children. Even before he became a police officer, he was there to help and serve those in need. We sure had a lot of fun at work! Weekends were special times for the staff and the boys we took care of. Sundays were full of sports, the outdoors, and plenty of cook-outs. I know for a fact that many many of the boys we worked with thought of Jerry as a friend, and a father figure. This is something those kids needed, and they sure ate it all up. He was always upbeat, and a complete joy to work with. I (as well as the other staff and kids) were sad when he left Bar-None. I lost track of Jerry for a few years, seeing him at "reunions", or a house party. The last time I saw Jerry is when I attended another fallen SPPD officer, Tim Jones' funeral. He recognized me right away, and came over. Too bad we didn't have our last time together during happier circumstances. I'll miss Jerry very much. My uncle has since retired from SPPD, but he used to tell Jerry "hi" from me from time to time. Its been said many times, but its a simple fact: Jerry was a cop's cop. A good man, through and through. He's going to be missed by all of us.

Your name was placed on a wall of honor Saturday. But you have held a place of honor in your family, the SPPD and the people of St. Paul.

Our agony is the same yet different. For our beloved men died heroes in the their own right, yet died as brothers from a much larger family.
I continue to be impressed by your ability to show the world your graceful smile and strength. You are simply amazing.
I noted the anniversary of Gerry's death with a prayer for you and your family and continue to do so.
It is said that "Heros live forever." If that is so (and I believe it is), then you too will live forever Connine. You are a hero to your children, your family and the larger family that we share: The St. Paul PD.
God Bless You Connie.

To the Vick Family,
Having received notice about the this guest book remaining online another five days, I took another look at all of the entrys.
I was again reminded of what a wonderful man Sgt. Vick was. I like many others never met Sgt. Vick, but would have been grateful to have known him. I just want to thank you for sharing him with the City of St. Paul, Minnesota and everyone. My God be with you and comfort you. Remember him with love and pride. He gave his best every day, it is very heart warming to read entries written by the folks he helped. He truely went out of his way. What a wonderful man. Always remember that you, his family have much to be proud of.
Time will heal your hurt, memories will keep him alive and with you.
God Bless you all, today and always. You all remain in my thoughts and prayers, as I am sure in the thoughts and prayers of many others. Your days, weeks and years ahead of you will be very difficult, but I am sure you will all continue to make him proud.
Sincerely,
Rosalie Sundin

Those few police officers who have the compassion, decency and wisdom to understand that being prostituted is far from anything as simple as a crime, come few and far between. Those like Sgt. Vick who understand the degradation, violence, emotional pain and everlasting shame linked to prostitution are counted among the few true heroes in our justice system. I thank god I encountered a hero like Sgt. Vick 29 yrs. ago when I was out there. I will pray not only for Sgt. Vick and his family, but also for the wide family of sisters he "took under his wing" during his years of service to our community ... the women and girls he helped will feel his loss immensely.

To Gerald Vick's family I send you all my thoughts and prayers. I lived on the east side of St. Paul, my hometown is North St. Paul, and I went to several schools Sgt. Vick did (though a few years after him). I don't believe I ever met him or knew his family, but I do feel a kinship with this hero from my hometown. He died too young, but he died with honor; never let it be said otherwise. Thank you Sgt. Vick

My continued thoughts and prayers are with you Connie and your children and the entire Vick family...you should all be so proud of your husband, dad, son and brother. What wonderful things he did for everyone whose life he touched. He will be missed....take good care of each other and live on the memories you all have!

Now I hear a sweet lark sing,
In the clear air of the day.
For a tender beaming smile to

fond heart does say.
A song of love from the year 1860.
It tells of the bond that will always be there between Gerald and those who love him--an eternal bond.

My husband and I attended North High with Jerry, he was a year ahead of us. We remember going to his parties and having them get busted by the cops, those were some good times. Jerry was such a nice guy. When I heard the news on Friday that a cop had been shot and killed, and then I learned that it was Jerry, I immediately called my husband at work, he hadn't heard the cops name yet, we couldn't believe it, it's still shocking to have such a tragedy happen to such a good person. What a great outpouring of people that attended the buriel in No. St. Paul, Jerry has been brought back home. To his wife and children, we pray for you to get through this tough time, your in our thoughts and prayers.

Raised on the east side of St. Paul, a Johnson graduate, and w/ parents still there, I take great comfort in knowing that the St. Paul Cops are there and will be there when they are called.
To the family of Sgt. Vick, thank you for your sacrifice. To the men and women of the St. Paul Police Force....you are the best! Thank you for your work. I am so proud to be a St. Paulite.

I heard of Sgt. Vick's falling in the line of duty on KTIS radio last Friday morning.
My heart goes out to the family, friends and fellow officers of Sgt. Vick. As a journalist, many of my close friends are law officers. I am sure I speak for most of the public safety journalists who work with, and get to know officers, that when we hear of a fallen officer, regardless of where, we think of our friends who are part of that great brotherhood of police officers.
My God grant peace to the family of Sgt. Vick and be with them now in thier time of need.

There are no words that can describe the sacrifice and senseless loss of this incredible human being. Husband, father, friend, brother...he was all those things and so much more. I was shocked and saddened and continue to mourn the loss of this man that I have never met. He was my daughter's friend's father. I can't imagine what your family is going through and will continue to go through. Please know that our prayers are with you and your family and that he lives on in your hearts forever.

I have lived on the East Side for 17 years. I have called the police for help several times and each time they were there for me and my family. Thanks for always being there, even though you could lose your life. Thanks Gerry. I am sorry for Gerry's family, his fellow officers and for the East Side. Keep praying
