Marc Lawrence Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 9, 2005.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Marc Lawrence, whose pockmarked face and brooding mannerisms made him a natural for roles as the tough guy, gangster and undertaker in dozens of movies, died Monday. He was 95.

Lawrence died at his Palm Springs, California, home from heart failure, said Alicia Lawrence, the actor's second wife.

Born in New York in 1910, Lawrence acted in plays through high school before attending City College of New York.

After years of stage performances in Eva Le Gallienne's company, Lawrence signed a contract with Columbia Pictures in 1932. Over the next 60 years, he played mob bosses, thugs and general bad guys in dozens of films.

During the 1950s communist scare, Lawrence was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee, where he admitted he had once been a Communist Party member. He also reluctantly implicated several co-workers as alleged communist sympathizers, testimony that blacklisted him and brought his U.S. movie career to a halt.

Lawrence moved to Europe, where he took on diverse roles in Italian movies in the 1960s and also directing crime films and spaghetti westerns. Lawrence returned to the United States in the 1980s and resumed playing roles as an underworld thug.

Marc will be missed by many. Michael, should you ever get a chance to read this, when I get to Hydra I will visit your studio and share with you the night your dad scared the daylights out of me in PS. He once gave me an autographed photo of himself and a copy of his book, both of which I will treasure forever. I was two doors down from him just two days before he passed away and still regret not stopping in for a visit. Learned a lesson in that. God bless you and your family. Xristos Anesti.

Marc Lawrence was the Picasso of character actors. They support the story. He will be missed as there is no one quite like him with his sinister stare, yet a face that showed so much.

He was a master of the craft. Rest In Peace,Marc.Beverly and John Westphal

I met Marc onc4e at the Celebrity Book signing,he loved Italy and the Italians. We spoke about my ancestors and he was very astute about the Italian culture.

Marc Lawrence always made an impression in all of his film appearances. My favorite was of his role as the bookie, Koppie in the Asphalt Jungle. It was a classic performance in a classic film.

Marc Lawrence didn't allways play the bad guy, Remember his roll in Shepard of the hills with John Wayne and Harry Carey, The only words that he spoke were while he was dying.

He was gifted at his Craft, and by far under rated. So many great Actors end up typecast and sometimes never are given the opportunity to express their many Gifts and range. Marc will be missed. God Bless him and his Family. Sincerely, Jimmy (Dupee) Costello
