July 10, 2015: I met Jeanette Carter at a Dulcimer weekend in around the late 1990's, and found her to be a lovely and kind approachable person, who wrote to me about her music tape that she was working on and would send to me when finished, that I could purchase. In the meantime, she sent me her memoir - a sweet remembrance of her life and family - at no charge. I just re-discovered it today and looked up her name and saw - sadly - her obituary from 2006.

This was truly an amazing person with so much talent the loss is clearly ours. Prayers fill our hearts while singing praises to God asking him to let us never forget the love we have for this wonderful person gone from our lives never forgetting the joy we shared experiencing a great talent. In Kentucky in early 1990 we would check out a real to real projector and film at the library. We would watch and enjoy a film called the Sunny Side of Life, what a joy. We now have the DVD. What great country folks, the Lord was ever present.

WHAT A LOSS

I have visited this page many times. Janette and I became acquainted through my poetry and she said "she loved them all". I wish Janette you could see some of my recent poems. I loved you then and I love you now!
Love Found A Way
By Mark Anthony Grubb
I was crucified on Calvary's hill,
It was the plan and my father's will.
The cost of sin was mine to pay,
My father's love had found a way.
Hanging there I saw your face,
And every soul in the human race.
I recalled that day when I was born
How I was loved on Christmas morn.
Son of man turning thirty three
Was born to die upon this tree.
I felt your pain and all your strife,
I surrendered all and gave my life.
The sky turned dark as angels cried
I tasted death, but I did not die.
I did God's will and did obey
My father's love had found a way.

We all are saddened by the loss of dear Janette, but we can find comfort in her knowing approval for the continuing traditions of her family. Being a local and growing up in this community, I can see how profoundly she is missed, and what an impact her death has had. My prayers and condolences to her family, and may her legacy live on forever.

Janette,
Your presence is greatly missed. I was at the Carter Fold in March 2008. First time I had been back to the Fold since your death. It wasn't the same. God bless the Carter family and all the joy their music has brought to others throughout the world.

"Give Me The Roses While I Live"
Wonderful things of folks are said
When they have passed away
Roses adorn the narrow bed
Over the sleeping clay
Give me the roses while I live
Trying to cheer me on
Useless are flowers that you give
After the soul is gone
Kind words are useless when folks lie
Cold in a narrow bed
Don't wait till death to speak kind words
Now should the words be said
Let us not wait to do good deeds
Till they have passed away
Now is the time to sow good seeds
While here on earth we stay
My memories of her are Roses, and they will Live with me forever.
With deepest sympathy,

Dear Carter Family: I visited the Carter Fold on October 22, 2006, and was very welcomed altho the Fold was not officially opened at the time. I believe I talked to Rita, who allowed me to visit the museum, I will return for the shows and to see other sites in the area at the end of April, 2007. It felt like I was walking on sacred ground at the Carter Fold. My condolences to all the Carters on the recent loss of Janette and Joe. The Carter music will live on in my house as long as I am able.

My fiance' and I visited the Carter Family Fold last Friday during the annual festival and
loved it so much. We could feel the presence of Janette and know
she approved of how well her family is carrying on her traditions. The music was wonderful
and we enjoyed visiting with Frances in the museum. She delighted us and our friends Kevin and Connie with not only her loving stories of her memories of the Carter family, but with her beautiful laugh! She truly left us feeling like we personally knew the Carter family before we left. We know Janette's memory will live on and we are only sorry we never had the opportunity to meet her or hear her perform.

To the dear, kind and immensely talented Rita and Dale: What a remarkable, but mainly, loving and inspiring Mother you were blessed with and may the memories and music you continue to carry on and share at the Fold make you wealthy in heart and spirit. It is such a joy to visit with you at the Fold and share in the rich history and music and good clean fun, but mainly just the kindness and goodness and a strength and peace that radiates from both of you leaves one feeling touched by your family and their gracious, gentle spirit. Your remarkable mother would be so proud! Thank you both and what you are doing to continue the legacy is fantastic and greatly appreciated! Smile and God Bless You! Becky - the animal lover and music lover down in Giles Co, VA.(It is always worth the trip to the Fold - a value cannot be placed upon it.)

On a beautiful moonlit October evening in 1985 my wife and I took our newly married son and daughter-in-law to the fold. I met this wonderful woman and also her brother, Joe. We were treated in a royal fashion and I felt as if I had sat at the feet of greatness. These kind of folks will not be replaced. My wife and I were raised in the 40's on Carter music and it will remain in our blood forever. God bless Janette Carter and the wonderful old-time mountain music.

I was a resident in Family Medicine in Kingsport, TN from 1989-1992 and had occasion to interact with Rita Forrester on a daily basis at Holston Valley Hospital. I went to performances at the Fold twice and so enjoyed Ms. Janette and Uncle Joe. The depth of Janette's talent was remarkable, as was her absolute disinterest in the spotlight and her obvious focus, to their immense benefit, on her family. My sympathies to Rita and the rest of the family, but also congratulations and thanks, from a music lover, to Janette (and Rita--who it looks like is following in her mama's largely unsung footsteps) for keeping the Family's legacy so vibrant. Godspeed.

Dear Friends, Janette was a beautiful lady who always had a big smile for me when I attended the festival. She is with the Lord, her parents A.P, and Sara, and Maybelle forever. The festival she worked so hard to make the success that it is will continue as a tribute to her and Joe. God bless her and best wishes to my Carter family friends. Carl Lanzilli, Nahant MA

I give Thanks for Janette and Joe, Rita and Dale, for carrying the music forward. I was so honored to perform my music, inspired by the Carter Family and this beautiful Southern Appalachia in which we live, at the Carter Fold, as part of the Smithsonian To The Mountain Tour. Janette was there to welcome us; including my "Appalachian Reggae"! The first song I learned to pick, in 1969 or so, was a Maybelle-style "Wildwood Flower".
I learned this song from my father and uncles. When they came to the Smithsonian show at the Fold and met Janette, I wept as I saw, and felt, a huge, long journey come temporarily full circle. May the Circle be unbroken.

My husband Ernie and I had of course known of the Carter Family and especially June and Mother Maybell; it wasn't until about three years ago when we found the book about the Carter Family that we learned the amazing story. We have since visited the Fold 3 times and were privilaged to see The Barter production of Keep On The Sunny Side at the Fold. Janette and Joe, along with Flo and Rita have signed our book. We now read everything we can find on the Carter Family and there is always a Carter Family CD and usually a Dale Jett CD in our players. We can't wait to hear Rita sing, we heard her Mother say she would. Janette was a treasure and we are sorry to see her and her era leave us. The music has influenced the world and will always live on.

It is such a huge loss to the world and of course to america. The music that was poured out of the Cater Family was magic and to me felt like the soundtrack to an early 20th century America when anything was possible. I kick myself to think this music and these people were out there to learn from and I didn't pay attention until it was almost too late. The circle is now unbroken.

We had the great privilege of meeting Janette Carter at the Family Fold last March, just two weeks after Joe died. Although it was a very brief meeting, we're so very, very glad that we weren't shy about approaching such a "celebrity." We were left with a feeling that we were now part of her extended family, which is truly an honor. We absolutely loved Janette and were so sad to hear of her passing. Our only consolation is knowing how happy she would be to be re-united with her Daddy, who's dying wish was that she carry on The Music. Our greatest wish is that the third generation of the Carters continue to carry the torch. We are so happy to hear that they intend to do so.

The last time I talked with Janette she said "come over and spend the night with me."I told her I would love to, but I didn't want to add to her burden, as she was ailing then. I have loved the Carter Family all my life and count it a privilege to have known Sara,Joe Gladys and Janette.
They are now and will always be in our hearts and on our minds.

I managed to get to the Carter Fold twice,, once was at the 50th,
Anniversary of the original sessions
in Bristol.. Janette was the most
gracious women I have ever met, she
was so welcoming.. It was through her that I got to met Sara and Maybelle and Gladys,, I actually had
the great pleasure of lunching with
them... I will never forget that.
My interest in the music of the Carter Family was fired-up by meeting Janette, her heart and soul
was wrapped up in her family's music, as a result my enthusiasm for
it grew wildly.. Carter Family music
is frequently featured on my radio
show,, The Radio Boogie heard over
CKLN in Toronto... Steve Pritchard.

Dear ones, We miss Janette. Her spirit will continue to echo through the valley at Maces Springs, and will be heard in good traditional country music everywhere it is heard throughout the world. Heaven has welcomed an angel and that is the perfect description for Janette Carter. It won't be the same at the Carter Fold without her sitting behind the bands encouraging a fun night for everyone. LIFE HERE ON EARTH PREPARES US FOR AN ETERNAL EXISTENCE, WHERE YOU SPEND IT DEPENDS ON YOUR FAITH IN THE SON OF GOD. JANETTE KNEW JESUS AS HER PERSONAL SAVIOR. TODAY SHE HAS ENTERED HER FINAL HOME TO BE WITH HIM. ONE DAY WE ASKED JANETTE WHY SHE DID NOT GO WITH JOHNNY AND JUNE ON VACATION TO JAMAICA, SHE THREW UP BOTH HANDS AND SAID, AND LEAVE ALL THIS. It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Jeanette.
I was raised on the music of the Carter Family and those were some of the best years of my life, listening and dancing to their music at family gatherings.
The Carter Family started years ago with Alvin, Sara and Maybelle, a shy gospel group singing with Jimmie Rodgers. Their songs were beautiful and lovely to listen too. The "Wabash Cannonbell" "Will the Circle Be Unbrokern" to name a few. In later years, after Sara and Alvin departed, Maybelle Carter began recording and touring with her daughters Helen, June and Anita. Alvin and Sara later reformed the Carter Family with their daughter Jeanette. After Alvin's passing, Maybelle and Sara reunited and the rest is history. What a History!
Jeanette is now at peace and back with the circle that started many years ago. We will miss her, but her family music will carrying on and bring joy to many families around the world.
I for one thank Jeanette and the Carter Family for the many years of joy and music that they have brought to my life.
In closing, I would like to pass on my Deepest Sympathy to Jeanette's family and the rest of the Carter family.
May God be with you all at this great time of sorrow.

My first memories of music are my mother and grandmother singing Carter Family songs. "Keep On The Sunny Side", "You Are My Sunshine" and others, were regularly sang as they stood at the wringer washer, or worked in the garden. 40+ years later, those songs still ring true and are as fresh and relevant as ever. Now, due to Janette's efforts, they have been passed on to another generation. Over the past several years, my 11 year-old daughter has been a frequent visitor to the Fold. She loves the music and sings the songs. Joe and Janette always made everyone feel so welcome. They were always so willing to talk with, pose for pictures, and spend time with folks. We will never forget their smiling faces. Through their efforts, the music has been passed on. Thank you, Janette; I know Heaven is rejoicing now as you join the rest of your family.
To Dale, Rita and all the family; our deepest sympathy in your loss. Your Mother was a great lady.

It is so very hard to give up such a wonderful friend. I know that God sends angels to surround us and I believe that Janette was one of those angels. It was with deep sadness that I heard the news of the passing of the late Janette Carter. As one that is steeped in the music of the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers for many years, I find it ia great loss to Country and Bluegrass music. It does not seem that long ago that her brother Joe passed away, as well as Dale Jett. Janette, was the link that kept us in touch with the Carter Family and their great tradition for counter music. As I live in Northern Ireland, I would welcome any information I could find about the Carter family. I have planed a visit to the Carter family Fold this summer, and was hoping that I could meet Janette. This can no longer happen.
I would like to say how sorry I am and would like to express my best wishes to Janette's family at this very sad time. Our prayers are with you all. Tony Friel, Sion Mills, N. Ireland

I am sorry to hear of Janette Carter's death. Although I did not know her personally, I know of her beautiful music and, of course, the music of her family. I will pray for her family and friends.

Dearest Carter Fold Family,
Janette will be missed terribly but not forgotten. There was a special warmth that you felt as soon as you walked in the door, as if it were home. She just had that special gift. We have faith that the Fold will continue with the hard work that is put in by several people each week. She is in a much better place and I'm sure my Dad (Leon) was one of the first people to greet her. He loved her soooooo much and enjoyed the times he had playing at the Fold. There is some beautiful music being played in Heaven today.
You are in our thoughts and prayers as you deal with this great loss. It's not easy but by doing what you know how to do best and continuing what she started (as we did at Kiser Supply) the legacy will live on and you still have that eternal connection. Her spirit will live on.
Many prayers,
The Kiser Family---Jan, Tammy, Greg, Tammy, Kimberly, Karahann, Kayla, Jimmy, Jennifer, Hannah & Amelia

My family has had four wonderful evenings at the Fold in Hiltons over the years, and the memories of the wonderful and awesome Janette playing and singing some songs and emceeing the night of entertainment and dancing will always be held strong. Having my hand held in hers as we talked for a minute or two next to the Fold's cast iron stove on a chilly Saturday night in December of 2002 was one of the most magical moments in my life.
Miss Janette was loved and respected the world over and will forever be held so dear by countless fans of American music. Our heartfelt and warmest prayers are with her as she joins those that have gone before in that musical family's circle in the sky.

It has been an honor to get to know Janette, Rita, Dale, and all of the Carter Family, and all of the friends from the Carter Fold. On my last CD, I asked Janette for a liner note, and she, being the kind person she was, and always helping me out as much as she could, wrote me one, and I will cherish it forever! To the family, You all are in my thoughts and prayers, and I love you all! God Bless You!

Ms. Janette was a dear friend, and
just a wonderful person....we loved her dearly! There will be a huge void on stage at the Fold, where she once sat. We will miss her terribly! Thank God our boys had the opportunity to know her and hear stories of how it was during those early years.
Thought and prayers to Rita, Dale, and the entire Carter Family. We love you all.
