Victoria Adams Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 15, 2006.
Victoria Gray Adams, who helped open Freedom Schools that pushed for civil rights in Mississippi in 1964 and became a founding member of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, died Saturday at her home in Petersburg, Va., friends said. She was 73.

Adams was a Hattiesburg, Miss. native. Along with Fannie Lou Hamer and others, she attempted to unseat the all-white Mississippi Democratic Party delegation during the 1964 Democratic National Convention at Atlantic City, N.J.

While they did not replace the all-white group, the Freedom Democrats brought national attention to Mississippi's racial and political divisions.

In 2004, Adams and others who formed the party were recognized at the Democratic convention in Boston for their trailblazing role.

Rueben affectionally referred as Buddy when I picked Vicki up to take her to the Central Va. Chapter of WU. on Sundays. How she will be missed by one in all but Vickie had a wonderful dash from the time she was born to her death.I feel so blessed having known her personally and the wonderful history she shared with me. May God show you that he needed the beautiful rose and He took Vickie. My prayers are with you ,Reuben and the children.

Hi Reuben. What a history! Vickie is the civil rights legacy. I am so happy to have her serve so unselfishly to the movement and for the rights that our children and grandchildren will continue to receive. You know first hand how she courageously fought for freedom. I am sure there are many unseen stories that have not been printed. We need to keep up the work. Forty years of marriage may seem long, but forty years of good marriage is short. I am thankful for their long loving union and praying that mine will be the same. We continue to have you all in our prayers. Still plan on attending services in Mississippi 9 SEPT 2006. Hang in there for Uncle Buddy.

With love,

I just wanted to express my deepest condolences to the family. Although, I have never had the opportunity to meet Mrs. Victoria, I had the privlege to learn and benefit from Cecil. I am certain that only a exceptional person could have raised such a brilliant thinker who carries the spirit of the movement.

Reuben you know we've been friends for a long time, and your mom was like a mom to a lot of us. I've been were you are so I know the pain you must feel, but keep you head high. Things will be better with time. To the rest of the family...Mrs. Adams was a great woman for a lot of reasons, but for me it was for her mentoring and example. My prayers to you all.

I met Mrs. Adams through her son Reuben who is a childhood friend of my husband. When I had my daughter I realized not only was Mrs. Adams a great mother to her own children but an example to so many others. She was what I aspire to be, and she will be greatly missed. Although my sympathies are with her family, I sympathize more with anyone who did not have the pleasure and privilege to meet such an inspirational, spirital, and magnificant woman. Mrs. Adams long after the memories of your accomplishments have faded away in history, your mark on so many lives will be carried on. Simply put, you will be greatly missed but fondly remembered...

The flame of justice, equality and fragrance for human compassion shall never be diminished, because she lived...

We are the benefactors of her dreams, tears and struggles and now the doors of opportunity await us all, because she lived...

So let us move forward in might, upward in our thoughts and steadfast in the work God has assigned for us all to do, encouraged and enlighted, because she lived...

Mother Adams, thanks for being you, a true servant of God!

to Cecil and family

Deepest sympathy to you and yours on the death of your beloved mother. Though I spoke to her often, I never had the honor of meeting her personally but I feel as if I knew her just the same. She was truly an inspiration to many - and I know you will carry on her life's work.

May God bless and keep you through this trying time.

Sincerely,

Farewell to a pioneer, leader, activist and "Icon" of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement. I remember "Ms. Gray" as being a "PUBLIC", staunch advocate and active supporter of Black people gaining their rights as first class citizens in the Mississippi Movement of the sixties. She not only talked about Blacks gaining their rights, but was an ACTIVE participant (Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party) in that process. This was during a time in Mississippi when such activites could put one in immediate financial or personal peril ...........My condolences to her family and many friends, especially those residing in the Palmers Crossing Community.
