Bo Schembechler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 17, 2006.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) – Bo Schembechler, the winningest coach in Michigan football history, died Friday after collapsing during the taping of a television show, according to three Detroit TV stations. He was 77.

Schembechler's death was reported by WXYZ, WDIV and WJBK, which did not cite sources. He died a day before the second-ranked Wolverines were scheduled to meet No. 1 Ohio State in the latest installment of the century-old rivalry.

Schembechler became ill and collapsed while taping a show at WXYZ in Southfield, the station said, and he was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.

Schembechler also was hospitalized Oct. 20 after becoming ill at the same location.

Police were sent to the station around 9:25 a.m. along with the city's fire department and escorted an ambulance to Providence Hospital, Southfield police spokesman John Harris said.

Schembechler met with the media earlier this week to discuss Saturday's super-hyped game.

During the news conference, the 77-year-old discussed the device that was implanted to regulate his heartbeat after he was hospitalized last month.

He said the device covered about half his chest and that doctors still were adjusting it.

Schembechler said he did not plan to attend the game in Columbus, Ohio, and that he doesn't attend road games anymore.

Schembechler had a heart attack on the eve of his first Rose Bowl in 1970 and another one in 1987. He has had two quadruple heart bypass operations.

The seven-time Big Ten coach of the year compiled a 194-48-5 record at Michigan from 1969-89. Schembechler's record in 26 years of coaching was 234-64-8.

Schembechler's Wolverines were 11-9-1 against the Buckeyes. But fans in both states generally agree the rivalry's prime years were 1969-78, when Schembechler opposed his friend and coaching guru, Woody Hayes. Ohio State prevailed in those meetings, going 5-4-1.

"It was a very personal rivalry," Earle Bruce, who succeeded Hayes as coach, once said. "And for the first and only time, it was as much about the coaches as it was about the game.

"Bo and Woody were very close because Bo played for Woody at Miami of Ohio, then coached with him at Ohio State. But their friendship was put on hold when Bo took the Michigan job, because it was the protege against mentor."

Savoring the decade of drama in 2003, Schembechler said, "It doesn't get any better than that, does it?"

Bo. A name that meant integrity, honest, hard working and loveable. I just finished reading his book that he wrote with Mitch Albom. The book reminded me of what a gem of a man and a coach he really was.

To The Family OF Bo Schembecheler,
I am sorry death had to take Bo so soon it is my hope that the family can find comfort in knowing that Jehovah will removed death, and sickness forever.
I didn't know Bo personally but I did want the family to know they are in my prayers and someone in the Chicago Land area is thinking about them and sending hugs there way.

I had the pleasure of meeting Coach Schembechler on two separate occasions several years apart. Once at an awards dinner in Tampa in the late 80's he signed a program for me and took a few minutes to talk about Michigan football. At a book signing a few years later - busy as he was - he managed a few words of conversation as he signed my copy of a book about Michigan football.

While it was easy to root for and admire Coach Schembechler from afar as a damn good football coach, having the opportunity to exchange pleasantries on two separate occasions was even better. It made him real and give me an appreciation of what a nice guy he was.

Dear Schembechler Family,

Bo is an American legend; a fabulous coach who taught young men about "The Team" and its importance in all aspects of life. Bo was Michigan, period. And he taught loyalty and respect to everyone he was around. I am from southern Minnesota, and grew up watching and listening to Michigan football in the 70's and 80's. Because of Bo, I am a lifelong Michigan football fan. I truly believe that Michigan is the #1 sports university in the country, knowing that it is also a top-notch university. My wife and 14-year old daughter bought us tickets to the 1st game against Vanderbilt for my 40th birthday; our first trip to beautiful Ann Arbor. What a gift to be in the Big House, the house that Bo built! God Bless you Bo! College Football has lost an icon. Coach, I plan on meeting you someday! GO BLUE!

I was tailgating, he was speaking in a tent nearby on the U of M golf course. As he drove off in a golf cart, I yelled out his name "Bo!" as did many others. I was out of the country when Bo died, and found out only because I sat down to watch the game. We were in the Caribbean, oblivious to any news.

I grew up in Ann Arbor, and am well versed about Michigan football. Bo was such an inspiration and a true legend-a friendly man, who I would see in town from time to time. Although I knew he had health problems, he seemed invincible.

I will always remember him as a generous, kind leader who helped shape students into men of character. He was tough and fair, and I will miss him dearly.

Heartfelt sympathies to all that loved him.

My wife, daughter, and I wish to thank you, Bo, and your family for such wonderful memories at Michigan stadium and elsewhere in Ann Arbor. What an inspiration and example you have been to us. We are truly grateful and will never forget what you have done.

I wrote and published this poem after my mother died three years ago. May it be a consolation to the Schembechler family and friends.

TRIUMPH SONG OF LIFE

In the misty morning quiet
On a dew-drenched mountain ridge
Bright shafts of early sunlight
Pierce the dense, foggy curtain.

In that resplendent moment
All is renewed, transformed
As the passing inky blackness
Gives way to glorious morning.

Even so the darkest shadows
That seemingly never end
In the seasons of our lives
Give way to new beginnings.

We cannot know in this life
The timing of the Divine
Or the reason we all pass through
The valley of Death's shadow.

Yet may our hope ever be
That new life follows decay,
That Winter is not the victor
Over Spring's enduring light.

It is one of those moments that you will always remember where you were when you heard the news. In the case of Bo, I was in Columbus at the Easy Living Deli near OSU campus. The deli was filled with OSU students, alumni, and coaches of various sports. The TV was on ESPN, as it always is, and when the announcement was made, the entire store fell silent as everyone gathered around the set to get the news. Bo was greatly admired by those in the deli, and they were extremely sad to hear the news. As a "Michigander", it brought back a flood of memories growing up in Detroit and attending games at the Big House. Talking football with my dad was the first thing I thought of when I heard of Bo's passing. My dad passed away in 1997 during the Notre Dame game. I know that Dad and Bo are sharing the same seat in their Big House to watch all future games. Whenever I think of Michigan, I think of Bo. Thank you for all the wonderful memories.

Dear Coach Shembechler,
Although I never met you personally, I feel like I've known you for approximately 37 years. I might not have agreed with all of your play calling but there was never a doubt in your integrity. My devotion to being a Michigan Wolverine fan is as important to me as anything other than my family and you played a very important part of that. I will be indebted to forever.

I can actually remember Bo coming to coach Michigan back in 1969. I was 6 then and as I watched the game on tv turning down the sound and tuning into the radio to listen to Bob Ufer do the play by play, it was at that moment that I knew I wanted to play football. I played the game with the same intensity that Bo did coaching. Even tho I wasn't able to play for Bo, I took his ideas and applied them to my everyday life. The way he showed his loyalty, integrity, and his love for the game and his love for Michigan I will never forget. I have traveled this world and at every stop as I wear my Michigan sweatshirts people from all walks of life would come up to me and say "GO BLUE". That says alot to me for the man they call Bo. Even tho I never met you, Bo, you had a large impact on my life and I thank you for that. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Thank you for being you.

Dear Coach Schembechler
When I was a young boy in Flint, my grandfather would take me to Michigan games. I often wore a "the lord is my sheppard, but Bo is my coach" shirt to the games. But Bo, you were like a sheppard in the lives of many great young men. Thank you for teaching so many great young men what it means to be a "Michigan Man" always. Even these days in Columbus I try to honor the legacies and respect you had for the game and more importantly life situations. You will always be remembered. I love you and Go Blue!

Arriving at Michigan Stadium for the memorial service for Bo, was a lot like arriving for a Saturday game. It brought tears to my eyes walking in because there was the Big House in all its glory, it has been so many years since I have been in the stadium, and it's like it was yesterday, and because Bo was not there to see the thousands of people filing in to pay respects, and because my 4 year old daughter was in Michigan Stadium for the first time and expected to see a football game. It was truly a celebration of Bo's life. I could see young and old, singles, families, couples, high school students, disabled in wheelchair, someone with a leader dog, groups of alumni, the stage, the speakers, the band, the diginiaries, the family and friends, the former players, all gathered together under a sunny sky that could have been a beautiful fall day except for the November chill. A great leader had passed on yet when you walk into Michigan Stadium you are consumed by the sense that you are not only walking into a place, you are walking into an experience that combines all other experiences in your life and all future possibilities and they all come together into a moment where you are living life to the fullest just as the man did who we all came to honor. It was sad and we mourned him yet we blazed with the spirit and with the emotion bourne of tradition that can be no other school. And we celebrated. We sang "The Victors" many more times than we ever have at any football game, feeling fiercely in our hearts that Bo was hearing the song and rejoicing in our love and devotion. So many gray haired alumni and so many younger people in attendance, proving that Bo's legacy will continue to influence future generations just as his predecessors did. The buildings that bear their name.. the students that fill the halls.... the lessons and the examples that were learned.. there can be no greater meaning to a life on this earth.

Fullback Fritz Seyferth running through Texas A&M line with Jerry
Schumacher and Glenn Doughty blocking, I thought, Wow this is cool.Look
