Ruth Brown Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 17 to Nov. 20, 2006.
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Singer Ruth Brown, whose recordings of ''Teardrops in My Eyes,'' ''5-10-15 Hours'' and ''(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean'' shot her to rhythm-and-blues stardom in the 1950s, has died. She was 78.

Brown, who later in life won a Grammy and a Tony, died Friday of complications from a stroke and heart attack at a Las Vegas-area hospital, said Lindajo Loftus, a publicist for the Rhythm & Blues Foundation, which Brown helped establish.

''Ruth was one of the most important and beloved figures in modern music,'' singer Bonnie Raitt said in a statement. ''You can hear her influence in everyone from Little Richard to Etta (James), Aretha (Franklin), Janis (Joplin) and divas like Christina Aguilera today.''

''She was my dear friend, and I will miss her terribly,'' Raitt said.

Brown's soulful voice produced dozens of hits for Atlantic Records, cementing the fledgling record label's reputation as an R&B powerhouse. Trained in a church choir in her hometown of Portsmouth, Va., Brown sang a range of style from jazz to gospel-blues in such hits as ''So Long'' and ''Teardrops in My Eyes.''

She later crossed over into rock 'n' roll with some success with ''Lucky Lips'' and ''This Little Girl's Gone Rockin','' a song she co-wrote with Bobby Darin.

But as R&B and rock 'n' roll fell out of style in the late 1950s, Brown and her musical contemporaries were forced into retirement. She spent most of the 1960s raising her two sons alone and earning a living as a maid, school bus driver and teacher.

Brown enjoyed a career renaissance in the mid-70s when she began recording blues and jazz tunes for a variety of labels and found success on the stage and in movies.

She won acclaim in the R&B musical ''Staggerlee'' and won a Tony Award for best actress in the Broadway revue ''Black and Blue.''

She also played a feisty deejay in the 1988 cult movie ''Hairspray.'' A year later, she won a Grammy for best jazz vocal performance for the album ''Blues on Broadway.''

Brown continued to perform and record in her later years, becoming a popular host of National Public Radio's ''Harlem Hit Parade.''

She also became a prominent advocate for the rights of aging R&B musicians during her long struggle to recoup her share of royalties from Atlantic. Her effort led to the formation of the Rhythm & Blues Foundation, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit dedicated to providing financial and medical assistance, as well as historical and cultural preservation of the musical genre.

First saw Ruth brown perform at the Granby Auditorium in Norfolk/Portsmouth in the very early fifties.
Followed her career periodically, heard and enjoyed some of her music.
When ever one of our musicians/singers pass on I feel a loss.
I will miss her and and I am certain a large number of people feel as I do and she will never be forgotten.

My mother met Ruth Brown in 1954 at The College Inn on Fayettevile St in Durham NC when she was about 18 yrs old--Ms Brown was very gracious and sweet to her--Mom saw her again in the early 90's when she went to Las Vegas and they traded phone numbers--Ms Brown remembered her and said she would keep in touch--I was thinking that Ms Brown would be too busy but she was a woman of her word and she and my mom would talk at least once a month up until right before she passed--I had the opportunity to see her also before sh passed at the Bull Durham Blues festival --My mom Ms Elneda Wilson and I will always appreciate her kindness and thoughtfullness--

For Ruth...whose recordings of ''Teardrops in My Eyes,'' ''5-10-15 Hours'' and ''(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean'' shot her to rhythm-and-blues stardom in the 1950s.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Miss Ruth...thanks to your marvelous voice and generous heart, you helped me bring wonderful artists back into the spotlight and turn the Hollywood Roosevelt's Cinegrill into a showplace. You introduced Charles Brown, Jimmy Scott, LaVern Baker, Chuck Jackson and Freddie Cole to LA audiences, but you were the one who always packed them in time after time. Always giving 110%, always a show stopper, always a lady. I just adored you, Miss Ruth. I always remember you and your wonderful spirit. You were my friend and I miss you.

My darling Ruth, I wrote you my first fan/love letter 53 years ago when I was 8 years old. I thank God for allowing you to come into my and my family's life when I was in my late teens. You were always there with a kind word of encouragement. I thank God for the way you shared your love for me with your family which prompted them to include me in your obiturary as one of your stepchildren. The only words left to be said is that I'll be loving you always. Rest in peace, Miss Woman!

I have ALWAYS been a fan of Ms. Brown. I remember her coming to visit my High School (which her two sons also attended) for a special program and her voice lifted the roof right off of the place!!! In later years Ms. Brown was always very gracious and invited me backstage whenever she heard that Ms. Half Hollow Hills was hoping to say hi!! I will never forget her voice, her talent or her graciousness. My deepest condolences to her family.

Dearest Auntie,
I will miss you dearly and I've enjoyed the conversations we had. You instill in me the wisdom, faith and trust. You taught me to be strong, believe in myself, and to have faith.
I recall the time when you cancelled your engagement with the Commissioner's wife and took your 6-yr old neice to McDonalds after her graduation. You've brought joy to my heart when your neice replied "Auntie I want to be just like you when I grow up".
You're legacy will live on and you'll always be a Diva and you touched the lives of Presidents and high officials. Love you always.

The first show I ever saw here in Vegas was Ruth Brown's at hte Bootlegger Bistro. She was as mezmerizing as I rememembered her from New York. One of the most endearing qualities about Ruth was that she was so genuine. I remember asking her to sign her CD; while nervously handing her one of mine. I said that maybe, if she wasn't too busy she might take a listen and tell me what she thought. I can still remember her smile and tell me; "Oh honey, I aint THAT busy." You'll never know how much that meant to me Ruth, I hope you rest in peace. I'd say God bless you, but I know he already did. He blessed me by letting me know you.

I was fortunate to see Ms. Brown in Las Vegas in July. She was vibrant and spunky and clearly enjoying performing and her admirers.

A great story about her: when her set was finished, I purchased several of her CDs and asked her to sign them for me. Her son handed her a red Pentel, and she gave it back to him, saying "That's the Devil's color!" She signed my CDs in green.

My sincere condolences to Earl and the rest of Ms. Brown's family. She and her talent will be missed by so many.

This is such a tragic loss but, I can't conceive of how tragic it would have been without the likes of Ms. Brown. Her talent, class and immensely larger than life persona have left an imprint and impact, not only on the blues community but, on the epitaph of humanity! Rest in Peace Sweet Lady.........

"All my friends loved Ruth Brown; I wanted to BE Ruth Brown!" were the words Little Richard used to open his induction of Ruth Brown when she was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame along with Etta James and Koko Taylor one night at the House of Blues on Sunset Strip in Hollywood. I was there that night and had the pleasure of introducing Ruth to Lillian McMurry, founder of Trumpet Records, who was there as my "date" that night. I also got to see an amazing Ruth Brown performance at Jazzfest in 1990 when she came back to the blues world after succeeding on Broadway.
She was one of a kind and a lady in the finest sense. I was proud to have been in her presence.

Ruth Brown was the epitome of artistry and class. She transcended any musical category and was such a gracious woman who I was pleased to have met and briefly chatted wit. She was a true diva, a term that is so overused today and confused with celebrity. Miss Rhythm may not be with us anymore but her music still will stay fresh in many of us for many many years.

Miss Rhythm,
Sadly, it wasn't until I was doing a tribute for Gerald Levert when I saw the notice for Ruth Brown; folks don't know but this woman was the one that BUILT Atlantic Records; she was one of the first to be put on its roster, and during the 1950s, she was a star; later on, she started the Rhythm and Blues Foundation; You are truly missed by me; Rest In Peace.

What can I say? I am here in St Louis, MO. Im a working musician whose life was forever impacted by an old 8-track recording of "If I can't Sell It" that my father let me listen to when I was 10. I remember her guts and candor as a musician. This i admire, respect , and emulate in my own music and life. Her voice commanded the attention and respect of the audience and she was always nothng but a lady! It is unfortunate that I never met her, but the world is a better place because she came! You will be sorely missed Ms. Brown!

To The Brown Family,
Ms.Brown will forever live in my heart, my nickname comes from one of her recordings," Mama" He treats Your Daughter Mean. I have been Mama to my family and friends for over fifty- one years, attaining the nickname at the age of 3 by one of my great aunts who was a fan of hers and according to her, after hearing continue playing of the song, I attempt to sing the words to the song, and whenever I would hear it I would jump up and start singing, never remembering all the words but... Mama and after awhile, it did'nt matter if I would be playing or sitting, I would be trying to sing my favorite song, so I guess Auntie thought " what the heck..." lets call her Mama" she loves the song... Whenever I'm asked how I got my nickname, I always tell them proudly... after one of Ruth Brown's songs.

You are in my prayers and thoughts.

They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

I am proud to say that Ruth Brown has been a dear friend of mine for close to 30 years. So many thoughts of our times together - how lucky I was!
One of my most treasured memories was taking her to our church for Christmas Eve services one year. You can only imagine what it was like to hear Ruth Brown sing "Silent Night" - everyone just sat enthralled in silence when she finished! Not a dry eye in the sancturary!
Many long phone conversations and laughter together. One of her favorite songs was "Let There Be Peace on Earth" -- Ruth, maybe you can oversee getting that accomplished now that you are in Heaven.

"May God Bless" dear friend.

Thank God for Ruth Brown. I always loved her signature "squeal". What an artist! Atlantic records might never have been established without her best selling early hits. They might have been like the countless other early R&B labels that quickly slipped into obscurity. If Atlantic had failed, we may have never been able to enjoy the other Atlantic greats like The Drifters, Ray Charles, The Clovers, Lavern Baker, The Coasters and all the rest of the GREAT Atlantic catalog. Thank you Ruth!
