Jack Ferrante Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 25, 2006.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jack Ferrante, a wide receiver on two Philadelphia Eagles championship teams in the 1940s, died Thursday. He was 90.

Ferrante died at a nursing home in Yardley, Pa., the team announced.

Nicknamed "Blackjack," Ferrante had 169 receptions for 2,884 yards and 31 touchdowns in a nine-year career with the Eagles.

He played for Philadelphia in 1941 and from 1944-50, and was a member of the Eagles' title-winning teams in 1948 and '49. He caught seven passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns for the Eagles in a game against the Detroit Lions at Shibe Park in December 1948.

Ferrante, a native of Camden, N.J., played sandlot football in Philadelphia and Wilmington, Del., but did not play football in college before signing with the Eagles in 1941.

Collected his football card as a kid in 1948. Remember being impressed that he was not a college graduate. Met his daughter and son-in-law recently and surprised both when, by chance, we talked about the 1948-49 Eagles and I recalled the uniqueness of Blackjack Ferrante,

I played football under Jacks tutelage on the 1959 Monsignor Bonner High School City champions. Jack move me from half back to fullback in my senior year to accommodate Joe triola. Under Jack coaching we won the Catholic league and of course beat Central and amazing 54-0. I tied or was the high scorer of the Philadelphia area thank you Jack my memories are many and indeled my mind and heart
