James Kim Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 6, 2006.
MERLIN, Ore. (AP) - A San Francisco man was found dead in a mountain creek Wednesday, four days after he set out through the snowy wilderness to seek help for his wife and young daughters, stranded in a car.

A search helicopter spotted James Kim's body about a mile from where he set out in Oregon's snowy Klamath Mountains, two days after his wife and two daughters were rescued from the vehicle, stuck on a remote road. Investigators believe he traveled about eight miles in total, and said there was no way he could have reached the car directly from where he was found.

Kim's body was found at the foot of the Big Windy Creek drainage, a half-mile from the Rogue River, where ground crews and helicopters had been searching for days.

A tearful Undersheriff Brian Anderson announced the discovery of the body, his voice breaking at one point.

"He was very motivated," Anderson said. "We were having trouble in there. He traveled a long distance."

He said he had few details about Kim's condition or the immediate area where he was found.

The body was taken to Central Point for an autopsy, the results of which are expected to be released Thursday.

Earlier in the day, searchers said they had uncovered clues that suggested Kim had shed clothing and arranged it to give searchers clues to his whereabouts. They had planned to drop rescue packages with clothing, emergency gear and provisions.

Kim, 35, was a senior editor for the technology media company CNET Networks Inc. He and his family had been missing since Nov. 25. They were heading home to San Francisco after a family vacation in the Pacific Northwest.

Kim's wife, Kati, 30, and their daughters Penelope, 4, and Sabine, 7 months, were rescued Monday at their car. She told officers that the couple made a wrong turn and became stuck in the snow nearly two weeks before. They used their car heater until they ran out of gas, then burned tires to stay warm and attract attention. With only a few jars of baby food and limited supplies, Kati Kim nursed her children.

The key to finding them, police said, was a "ping" from one of the family's cell phones that helped narrow down their location.

Roads in the area are often not plowed in the winter and can become impassable.

I followed the story of the disappearance of the Kim family in the news. I hoped against hope they would be found alive and healthy, as did thousands of people across this country. The discovery of the body of James Kim broke my heart. I didn't know James Kim and his family, but tears flowed anyway at the news of his passing. Many tragedies have occurred in Oregon through the years,
but the one that left a gaping hole in my heart was the passing of James Kim. I've heard many stories of people lost or killed in the Oregon wilderness, but for whatever reason this situation really got to me. I can't explain it, but I felt a special kinship with James Kim.

It's heartbreaking to read stories such like his. He was a great Father and Husband, risking his life for his family. It's being so long since he passed away and its feels like it was yesterday. So many good people are falling asleep in death, however it was never God's purpose for this to happen. That's why I'm hoping that Kati his wife and the daughters are doing better now, and that Our Heavenly Father continues strengthening them in their endurance.

I did not know James, but I wish that I had. James made the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect and save his family. If I were stranded with my family and believed that town was only 4 miles away, I would have done the same thing. My heart goes out to the Kim family. RIP James. You're bravery shall not be forgotten.

I saw the story tonight on 20/20 and thought it is so sad for James to have died after all his efforts. I admire the composure of Kati. They are (were) both very strong and commited parents and individuals, which is a treasure and example for their beautiful daughters. I also admire the efforts of all those from search and rescue teams, the results of this one in particular were so bitter-sweet. To the Kim family (parents, Kati and girls) may God give you the courage and strenght to accept the death of an extraordinary man that was part of your lives. May he live forever in your hearts!!!

Two years have passed, and yet I still think about James and Katie's struggle to bring their children home. May time bring your family peace during this most difficult season.

I followed the story from my home on LI with a lump in my throat, so worried for all of you. When they found Katy and the girls I was first elated, then increasingly upset when it became clear James probably had not survived..the conditions being so harsh. It was so shocking because it could have happened to any of us. Both Katy and her beloved husband gave everything and more than they had to save their family. "What greater love.."? James Kim caught my heart and is a true hero for the ages. They both are. What a beautiful man. I am so sad for Katy because he isn't still with her and their daughters. His parents and family will be so proud of this wonderful man, but I can't imagine how tough it will be to get over his loss. The World is lessened without him.

I was among those hundreds of thousands of strangers who watched from afar, waited and prayed from the first moment I read that 'a family is missing after Thanksgiving trip'. If the power of our prayers could not save ALL of your lives, let us hope that that energy lifted James to a very warm and comfortable place. I am hard pressed to understand why this, among many daily tragedies, struck my heart so - and struck again in a most gut-wrenching way when James was found. I think of you all still - wishing comfort for the Spencer Kims and for you, Kati and the girls.

I watched the news stories and prayed for James. I'm so sorry this happened -- the goodness of Jame's soul seemed to radiate from his CNET Reviews, and his love, courage, and heroism were obvious in his actions. I have also suffered a sudden, unexpected death of a loved one who was in the same exact situation as I. For years, I thought, "Why did I live and he die??" I couldn't understand why bad things happen to good people. I got some help and finally got through the stages of grief that are necessary for true healing. I hope that you will do whatever you need to heal from your grief and continue to be the amazing family that James loved.

Also, have you thought of setting up a scholarship fund for your daughters? I would be happy to contribute.

Take care. God is with you, and God is with James. His character and goodness has inspired so many of us.

Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.
