Paul Arizin Obituary
A Hall of Famer who was cut from his high school team, Arizin died in his sleep, according to a statement from Villanova University, where Arizin had an outstanding college career.
Despite losing two years in his prime to the Korean War, "Pitchin' Paul" forged a sensational pro career on the strength of his jump shot, a recent evolution of the game. Arizin perfected the style playing on slippery gym floors and averaged 22.8 points in his 10-year career. He was inducted into the basketball Hall of Fame in 1978.
Drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors in 1950, he led the league in scoring in his second season before serving two years in Korea with the Marines. He returned to lead the Warriors to the NBA championship in 1956, scoring almost 29 points per game in the playoffs.
By his second season in the NBA, Arizin captured the scoring title by averaging 25.4 points. He also averaged 11.3 rebounds while leading the Warriors to the playoffs.
At 34, Arizin retired in 1962 when the Warriors moved to San Francisco. He played three seasons with the Camden Bullets of the Eastern Basketball League.

Late condolences to my cousin Paul, who my brother and sister really did not get to know. His middle name was that of his Uncle, my Father, Joseph Samuel Arizzi, who passed away in February 1957. The last time I had contact with your grandfather, Father, was as a fifteen year old, at my Father's funeral in February 1957, when Paul and Roger, his Dad, our Uncle came to the funeral.

Paul Arizin was my grandmothers, ousin she told me about his family and how she used to play with his kids as a child. She thinks hes a very nice person.

This is the third anniversary of my grandfather's death. He died in peace, just as he would want. Personally, I miss him so much. He was a huge presence in my life, and life itself has not been the same without him. He was the guiding light to me and others. it is hard to believe it has been three years already, because I still think about him in every day life. His presence on Earth it greatly missed. He should not only be remembered as a pioneering in the sport of basketball , but an outstanding man with an impeccable character. His greatest quality was his humility, which is a lesson he instilled in everyone who knew him. he will never be forgotten. I know he is looking down on us all, and enjoying his time in heaven. i love you and miss you every day grand father.

I bled Celtics green but I always admired Paul Arizin, whose class and style and deadly shots from the corner would break my heart when they went swish! Yet, I admired him and kind of enjoyed him scoring against us, while I rooted for Wilt and others to miss!
Arizin never missed being a role model. How blessed is your family for having such a talented sportsman on and off the court.

What a truly great guy. I knew Mr. Arizin when we were the Breslins on 18th Street. There wasn't a bit of pretense about him. Mass every day...every day, what more need be said. He was the real deal. We looked up to him, not because of basketball, heck we were so young we only saw him play for the Camden Bullets, but because he truly was a Presence, in life, where it counted.

To the family of Paul Arizin...my favorite player. I met Paul as a sixteen year old kid. Our team buses were held up by an accident outside Ft. Wayne, IN. As a Philadelphia Warrior, he shook my hand as players were walking around as the accident was cleared. We had a conversation and that great moment for me is described in a book I just wrote titled Growing Up in Indiana. I sent Paul a copy and he immediately sent me an autographed picture and nice note telling me that he remembered when we met, but "was surprised I remembered it." How could anyone forget meeting such a great player and a great, gentle man? Paul Arizin was a class act and proved that to me twice. I am glad I had the pleasure of meeting him. Respectfully,

My late father, Joseph, used to take me with him to Villanova basketball games at the Palestra when I was a kid. Watching the recent NCAA games took me back and prompted me to surf the net in search of articles about those glory days. Sadly, it also lead me to the discovery of Paul Arizin's passing. I will never forget the way my father's eyes would light up as he told me tales of Paul Arizin's walk-on, superlative career at Villanova - And of his personal humility. Mr. Arizin was a true hero to my father. Be assured, Arizin family, that even 3,000 miles and 40 years away, Paul Arizin is remembered.

My prayers are with all of you.....I remember my days of playing basketball at the Avalon Community Center playing sometimes with Mike or against, but a great summer workout to keep in shape for the Home Court in Philly....Brophy and Corrigan, and keeping the watchfull eyes on the gams was Mr. Arizin...As the years went by we all went our seperated ways, but never missed a summer in Avalon...You will not remember me, but I do remember the Boss.....

Mr. Arizin will always be my basketball hero who gave his time to coach our grade school team with Mr. Kearney. We followed his final years in the NBA in our grade school classrooms. It has been an honor and a privilege to get to know Mr. Arizin through his sons. I know very little about him as a basketball player, other than what I've read or heard from others. I do know that he is one of the most genuine people I've ever met. Though I met him just a few years ago, he always took the time to say hello and ask how my wife and kids were doing. He was a real class act and a true winner. I am so glad that I got the opportunity to get to know him.

The world will miss one of the finest gentlemen ever to grace the earth. He attended most of our high school games even after Michael graduated. We all really would have preferred to have Mr Arizin as our coach, but I think he was well aware of our lack of talent and was better off in the stands. What a wonderful guy!! I attended Villanova in the mid 50's and saw Paul during the Spring Alumni games....he was awesome then as well. What an idol to the thousand of kids. He was not only a basketball player who was one of a kind, but a gentleman as well. We will miss you, Paul. In my younger years I tried in vain to copy that jump shot that only you could do,and throughout my years I have thought of you often.

Our condolences to all of the Arizin family at a time of such deep loss. Besides all the memories of Mr. Arizin being involved in the CYO program at St. Kevin's, later in life I can remember many Saturday mornings driving my boys to hockey practice in Springfield. As we were coming up to the light at Sproul Road there he was, walking tall and proud on his way to St. Kevin's for mass. I'd slow down so that my boys, who knew all about Mr. Arizin from their grandfather's many stories, could get a good look at this legend that lived in my own home town. We sat through more than one red light.

Dear Maureen and family, I grew up in Norfolk, Virginia in the 40's and 50's and followed Paul's superb basketball career as an admiring kid. Little did I know then that I would later work side by side with Paul at IBM in the 70' and 80's. He was a "star" in his business world as well, having set a high standard of integrity and business acumen for those of us who worked with him.
At the end of his IBM career, I had the honor and privilege of serving as organizer and master of ceremonies for the retirement dinner we put together for Paul. We had to hold it in a very large banquet room at St. Anthony's Parish Hall in Wilmington because there were hundreds of his fellow corporate and business colleagues who wanted to attend it and thank him for his help to them. It was a wonderful evening that reflected the respect and admiration we felt for Paul.
It is with great pride that we knew Paul and benefited from his wisdom and friendship.

It is apparent that Paul Arizin was a one-of-a-kind gentleman in every role he played on this earth. It's equally apparent that he left quite a mark here, most visibly through the outstanding family he left behind. Saying goodbye to such a man is very hard...but as surely as he lives on in the hearts of those who knew him, he lives on still where basketball is surely the game of choice. I remember Mr. Arizin coming to most of our winter league games @ Upper Merion.It was an honor to have him at our games.He is a legend watching a bunch of guys play in a bar league.He just loved to watch good basketball and to see his sons play.After we won the championship Mr. Arizin signed the book with the top 50 NBA players in it.I will never forget those days.Arizin Family: I am very sorry for your loss he will be missed but never forgotten.

In November of 1959 I first saw Paul Arizin play NBA basketball. I was only 12 years old but Paul left quite an impact on me. Paul and his Philadelphia Warriors played the Syracuse Nationals and the great Dolph Schayes that night in the old Camden Convention Hall in New Jersey. The building was standing room only, packed to the rafters with Warriors fans. The atmosphere in the small arena was electric with anticipation. Paul Arizin did not disappoint as his jump shot was a marvel and his foul shooting true perfection. I remember how he moved with so much class and intensity without any false pretense. He had a quiet but strong sense of confidence. Even though Paul was sharing the court that night with great team mates like Guy Rodgers, Wilt Chamberlain, and Tom Gola, it was obvious that Paul was at the top of his game even though he was around 31 years old. I can remember that magical night in 1959 as if it happened yesterday. When the game ended with a hard earned Warrior victory I actually walked on to the hardwood court with my father and stared at one of the baskets while I pictured myself taking a jump shot towards that hoop with the same form as my hero Paul Arizin. I also pictured foul shots swishing through the net as I imitated Paul's unique underhand style. Ironically, about four years later, in 1963, I watched Paul Arizin play on that very same Camden Convention Hall Court for the Camden Bullets of the Eastern League. Paul was then about 35 years old but he still managed to be named "Rookie of the Year" in the Eastern League. Even though he was approaching middle age Paul was scoring over 40 points a game on a regular basis against players much younger, quicker, and taller than he was. Paul's knowledge of the game and his ability to outsmart younger players was amazing. Paul consistently was able to make his defender leave his feet. Once the defender committed himself he was at the mercy of one of Paul's many offensive moves which always resulted in a personal foul for the defender and two fouls shots for Paul. The only way to truly appreciate Paul's style of play was to see him play. He played a team game. His goal was to win without personal glory or gain. It was not unusual to see Paul shoot 15 to 18 foul shots in a game. A foul shot for Paul was money in the bank because he shot around 85% from the line. As a man and as an athlete Paul was one in a million. He had character. He had class. I feel very blessed that I was able to see Paul play when I was a young boy. Paul Arizin left quite an impression on me. May he rest in peace.

I first met Mr. Arizin while playing basketball at Drexel with Chris. He came to every home game and watched intently from the stands. He would occasionally give us a ride after the game and share his insights about the game and basketball in general. My favorite pearl of wisdom was "Chris, you should always take a cold shower the day of a game, it keeps you more alert". I can still hear him saying it like it was yesterday! He was from the old school and we could all use more of that type of advice. You are fortunate to have had such a great father!

One memory of Mr. Arizin sticks out, it was around 1975 when he and my dad were sitting around just talking about basketball and the finer points of the game. He was describing what the key to a "soft touch" was all about, it was about proper grip, release and rotation and I thought, wow!, he really knows his game, no wonder he was an NBA all star!
What is most inspiring about him was his committment to daily Eucharist, his journey home to his Lord is truly filled with great joy, congratulations Mr. Arizin, we love you.

I had the honor of meeting Mr. Arizin at Bailey Park when he came to see one of his grandsons play summer ball. I made it a point to introduce my sons to him. It always made me feel better when he was there. You could tell he loved the game, especially when the players played it the right way. A great man and a great family. Paul and I corresponded over some 20+ years...exchanged Christmas cards and he sent me many signed BB cards...as well as a signed basketball with inscription to me. I had lunch with Paul and one of his sons, Tim, at the end of October this year. It was, after watching him in the 50's, and being a great fan, fantastic to meet him; he was warm, humble, gracious and more. I thank God I had, after all these years a chance to meet and talk to him...at length. He is in my prayers and I hope he is showing God how to take that jumper. God rest and keep you, Paul.

I was sad to here about the passing of Paul. My Father played with Paul for the Quantico Marines basketball team in the Early 50's. My Father always had shared many fond memories of Paul taking the time to teach him how the game was played.He always looked up to Paul and the way he carried himself throughout his life. My family was saddened to hear of Paul Arizin's passing. My late father, Tom Casey, LaSalle College High School Class of 1948, was cut from the Varsity Basketball Team with Mr. Arizin in the fall of 1945. Paul Arizin was my father's favorite player of all time. Our sympathies to the Arizin Family.

I did not know the family personally, but as a child I lived on the same street in Springfield, PA. It was a different era when a basketball superstar was paid an average working salary. My personal highlight was when he visited one my Boy Scout Meetings at St. Kevin's Church, and I got his autograph. May the Lord comfort Paul's family and continue to bless them.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy at this time of our loss. It was an honor to know Paul and have the opportunity to speak with him during the mens league games. I always joked with Mr. Arizin about hiring him to keep score and he would always just smile and tell me he "didnt need the money". Just that one small story describes his humbleness. I think I speak on behalf on the entire league when i say that his presence at Gulph Gym will be missed. Mike, Chris and the rest of the family, Im sure you know that Paul was just as big a legend off the court as his was on. I wish you all the very best.

I remember Mr. Arizin on Avalon's 18th St. Beach. He was huge and the only adult to come out of the water and roll around in the hot dry sand - like us kids. Then he would walk to Stone Harbor and back!
I love Michael's note. Mr. Arizin was the perfect blend of sheer class, strong character, hard work ethic, sense of humor, empathy, and spirituality. He was a humble servant of Christ, and an example for us all.

I grew up in Mansfield,Pa. I learned to shoot the new jump shot ( the shot that revolutionized the game)by watching Paul Arizin play on TV.
When I worked on that shot in the drive way...I was "Paul Arizin" in my mind's picture.
Paul and his team were a model for my team mates in high school.
Basketball was a wonderful life experience for us.
I was able to "keep in touch" with his life through some personal connections in Villanova.

Thank you all for your very kind words.
My Dad and I were together the night he died watching a men's league game where some friends of mine were playing. He loved sports at the "grass roots level", where people competed for the sheer love and joy of it.
He said to me many times that his NBA career came at the right time, and that that he was so glad he was not playing now, when the primary motivations were fame, fortune and accolades...all things that my Dad had no time, whatsoever, for. It just was not who he was.
My Dad was a good man, kind, simple and humble; a FAR better husband, father, grandfather and friend, than he was a basketball player.
His shoes (off the court...the ONLY ones that he cared about) will be impossible to fill.
It seems the as though my "compass" is gone and I am lost.
Thanks for everything, Dad.
I love you and will miss you more than I can say.

I remember Paul best from watching him play for the Camden team in the Eastern League after his NBA career was over. He hadn't lost his amazing shooting ability and just him being there showed his love for the game. Thanks for all the memories.

Paul was one of my close friends from S. Philly where we played ball at the 'Park' (Marconi Plaza), and went to Villanova together. I'll never forget his thoughtfulness and kindness over the years! E.g., he introduced me and my 8 yr. old son to Wilt Chamberlain after an exhibition game at Cole Field House (U.ofMd., where I lived then) back in about 1960. I have been very, very ! proud of my friendship with Paul, one of the great gentleman AND basketball players of our time! May God bless him and as the Irish say "Keep him in the palm of His hands"! Pitchin Paul, like so many others signing this book was one of my first Sports Hero's. Paul was a class guy on and off the court. He played with so many of the all time greats and was 2nd to noone. I can recall as a youngster in Darby, when Paul was dating his future wife, he would come calling on her in his Marine Corps uniform. He sometimes would take the time to shoot a few baskets with our " gang " at the playground as he waited for his date. Goodby Paul and Semper Fi!

Pitchin' Paul will always be amongst my fondest memories of growing older [but not up] in Philly. Tom Gola, Robin Roberts, Concrete Charlie, The Dutchman, Richie Ashburn and Wilt are just a few. Philly wouldn't have been Philly without them. Feels like I lost an old friend.

I was fortunate enough to be able to watch Paul, Wilt, Guy, and Gola battle the Celtics and others at Convention Hall in my youth. Paul was one of the best of all time and he had the prettiest jump shot in the history of the NBA. I got to know him personally after his NBA days when we became coworkers in business. He was a warm, genuine, kind, humble man in spite of his fame and achievements. I would like to express my condolences to his family.

I had the pleasure of working with Paul at IBM for twenty some years in three different offices. He was one of the finest men that I ever knew.
He was a complete gentlemen, an ethical business man and very humble. Most people, of course, know him as a star basketball player, but to us that worked with him he was an intelligent hard working man with a great sense of humor who never forgot his humble roots. But most of all he was simply a good friend. We will miss him

Although I am only 46 and was not old enough to watch No.11 play, thanks to NBA 2005 I use him as my shooting guard with Allan Everson as my point. He was an outstanding shooter and that's an understatement. He will be missed.

I'm only 48 years old, so Paul Arizin was before my time. To be in my family, however, is to be a Wildcats fan. I joined the club when I was 5. My father always raved about Paul Arizin. He often told a story from his army days. Nova was to play an exhibition against a team from the Navy. One of my fathers army buddies looked over the Wildcats star and remarked "So that's Arizin. He doesn't look like much to me."
Paul Arizin went out and torched the opponent for 85 points that night. My dad asked his buddy after the game "What do you think now?"
He was a little impressed.

Paul Arizin was my first favorite basketball player. I'm glad I was there when he attended the first Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame Foundation dinner a couple of years ago. When he gave his speech you could tell that he concidered himself just a regular guy. Just like many other people in this area, I would like to send my condolences to his family.
